Music (Senior)

Senior School Music

In the Senior School, as it is across the whole school, pupils are aided by a team of specialist teachers to find their own musical journey through an imaginative and stimulating curriculum, with the option of learning an instrument from the earliest opportunity and by participating in a wide range of extra-curricular musical activities. We aim to provide something for everyone and all types of musical endeavour are encouraged. In addition, the department is a centre for termly ABRSM examinations, and Trinity examinations are run twice yearly.

There are opportunities to perform in many different styles at a variety of levels, whether it be the hymn-singing in Chapel, an Orchestral and Concerto Concert or an Evening of Jazz and Popular Music. Every pupil competes in the Inter-House Unison Song Competition, and music competitions offer opportunities for excellent soloists. Many of these performances are uploaded onto the School's YouTube channel

Large numbers of our musicians reach very high levels and several have gone on to secure places at Conservatoires in Birmingham, London (RCM and RAM) and Manchester (RNCM), Choral or Organ Scholarships or become professional performers or teachers.

Our musicians tour regularly, and a musical is staged every two years

Senior School Choirs

The Choirs form an integral part of School life. Below is just a sample of what they do and where they have performed in recent years.

Chapel Choir: The Senior Chapel Choir is around 55 singers including some staff. The Choir sings at every School Service, including Harvest, Remembrance, Advent and Christmas Carol Services, Sung Eucharist, Choral Evensong and Commemoration. Cathedral visits are regular – most recently to Chester, St Paul’s, York Minster, Gloucester and Peterborough. The Chapel Choir undertook a tour of New York, singing at three venues of National importance.

Chamber Choir: By invitation, Chamber Choir consists of invited members and repertoire is usually, though not entirely, secular and lighter than that sung by the Chapel Choir. They have performed in St George’s Chapel, Windsor and in St David’s, Pembrokeshire, plus many more cathedrals around the UK. The girls gave a performance of Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, selections of which appear on the Advent to Christmas CD which you can purchase from the Music School.

Choral Society: Open to all adults and pupils associated with Bromsgrove School, sometimes with a Prep School involvement. Recent concerts include Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, Mozart’s Requiem and Haydn’s Te Deum. The Choral Society have performed Fauré’s Requiem, Cantique de Jean Racine and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs to name but a few.

Senior School Ensembles

Many pupils form their own bands and Music staff organise a wide variety of ensembles. Large numbers of our musicians reach very high levels and several have gone on to secure places at top music universities and conservatoires. But they all have one thing in common - they all started in ensembles at Bromsgrove School! Below is just a sample of the groups that pupils can get involved in at the Music School.

Brass Group: This is a group inclusive of all brass players, whichever standard of playing they are at - whether they have lessons at School or not. If someone is a lapsed brass player, they are also welcome to attend if we can find an instrument for them to play. A mixture of different styles of music is played throughout the year.

Flute Group: The Senior Flute Group is a well established ensemble in the Senior School for flautists at grade six or above. We play a very wide range of music including some special arrangements of well known classical, jazz and pop pieces as well as more contemporary flute ensemble repertoire.

Windband: Senior Windband is a new group started by Mr Dunlop for any woodwind players in the Senior School who are at grade three or above. We cover a wide range of fun and exciting repertoire including special arrangements of pieces chosen by members of the band. We perform at as many school events as we can.

Bosendorfer 280 VC Grand Piano

Bromsgrove School celebrated the redevelopment of their historic Routh Hall with the purchase of a new Bösendorfer 280 Vienna Concert Series concert grand piano from Coach House Pianos. You can watch their video of the installation and a few interviews with pupils and staff here.
