Against the backdrop of tougher national standards in both A Level and GCSE examinations, Bromsgrove School has been delighted to celebrate some of the best academic results in its long history.
The GCSE results which our Fifth Form pupils, and their parents, nervously opened on the morning of 22nd August represent a considerable personal achievement and we are extremely proud of everyone.
Of the 1,927 GCSE qualifications sat in the Summer Term, 62% gained at least a grade 7, with 41% gaining an 8 or 9 (equivalent to A*/A). The most common grade awarded to a Bromsgrove pupil was a grade 8.
Upper Sixth students from the Bromsgrove School Class of 2024 have received their IB, A level and/or BTEC results, and there is a great deal to celebrate.
As regards universities, the picture is very encouraging; an unprecedented 90% have secured their first-choice place, and the vast majority of the remainder will be going to their insurance choice.
Overall, our 212 Upper Sixth leavers achieved 60% A*/A grades, or the equivalent, and 83% A*/B or the equivalent.
In BTEC, the 52 entries saw twenty-five Distinction*s (equivalent to A* at A level) being achieved. The proportion of those achieving at least a Distinction is 92%.
EPQ results are also strong. A large cohort of 115 entries saw just under two-thirds achieve at least an A grade.
This summer, our IB Diploma cohort delivered an exceptional performance, achieving the highest pre-remark scores in the School’s history. With an average total score of 39.6 points, students demonstrated academic distinction across the board (the world average score is 30.58 points).
Of the 53 students in the cohort, thirty-one achieved 40 points or more, a benchmark reached by only 10% of students worldwide. Notably, four students – Bijen G, Erik P, Lina S, and Celia V – attained the perfect score of 45, a rare accomplishment achieved by fewer than 1% globally. An additional six students scored 44 points, underscoring this cohort’s remarkable depth of achievement.
Across 159 Higher Level subjects, students achieved 87 grade 7s (55%) and 47 grade 6s (30%), resulting in a cumulative A*/A equivalent rate of 84%, as per UCAS conversion standards. This outcome firmly places the School’s results well above global averages and even surpasses post-remark figures from previous years.
The calibre of these results ensures our students will secure placements at the most competitive institutions, including Oxbridge, top London Universities, and prestigious Ivy League universities in the US.

Bromsgrove's Sixth Form leavers now head off to a wide range of top UK universities, with a number also going on to prestigious overseas institutions.
Headmaster Michael Punt said, “For each individual student, every final grade represents considerable personal achievement given the period of uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their academic successes and mature approach should reassure them that they are ready for the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead. We wish them every future success and happiness and hope they will stay in touch with us.”

Lucia Goodwin, a day pupil in Thomas Cookes House, scored the maximum 45 points in her IB Diploma this year. When asked what the IB means to her, she said it is all about breadth and the academic freedom to explore practically anything that interests you. Talking about her sixteen years at Bromsgrove School she says, “What flashes in my mind are all the non-academic opportunities I have had here. I remember flying an aeroplane with the RAF section of the CCF; waving my phone-torch in the air at Cultures Connect; everyone screaming on Zoom when we won the Shine Awards’ ‘Best Magazine’ for Two Zero One; getting hopelessly lost on Bronze DofE; waving our banners at Twickenham at the Natwest Schools’ Cup rugby finals and so much more. I am leaving School having received an amazing education, but it is these experiences that have given me confidence, friends and memories that will last long after the structure of biological molecules have faded from my mind.” Lucia now goes on to study Geography at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. |
Leonie Sackers from Germany scored 45 points in her IB Diploma in 2021. A boarder in Mary Windsor House, she enjoyed the broad curriculum and holistic approach of the IB. During her time at Bromsgrove School she says, “I enjoyed the well-prepared lessons, which the teachers taught with enthusiasm, especially when we had to switch to online lessons amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The great care and support by the staff, particularly the IB coordinator, is something I appreciated a lot and it really made a difference. Another factor I loved about Bromsgrove is the vast and excellent sporting opportunities and facilities, as well as the other extracurricular activities that the School has to offer.” Leonie is spending her summer completing an internship in the corporate finance department at a biotech company. From September, she will go on to study International Business Administration. |
