Gold Rush at IAPS Athletics Finals

Gold Rush at IAPS Athletics Finals

Posted: 05/07/2016

On Monday, 4th July, after the academic school year had finished, Bromsgrove Preparatory School enjoyed their finest ever day at the IAPS National Athletics Championships.

Sam R became National Champion not just in the long jump, with a jump of 5.44 metres, but also in the triple jump with a best of 11.49 metres. Sam has achieved considerable success at these championships over last two years and he managed to retain the long jump title he won in Year 7.

The gold rush continued on the track when Billy M and Louis U both ran superbly in the final of the Year 6 boys 70 metres Hurdles with Billy coming first in 11.96 seconds and Louis second in 11.97 seconds. An unbelievable proud moment for us as a School having two pupils come 1st and 2nd in a National Final. Billy backed this up with a 4th place finish in the long jump.

In the Year 8 boys' events, Ethan H broke the School 300 metres record finishing with a new lifetime best performance of 41.08 seconds, and fourth overall, only a tenth from a bronze medal. Ethan also came 9th in the triple jump.

Lewis H also contested the Year 8 boys' 300 metres in a time of 43.57 seconds. The Year 8 boys' 4x100 metres sprint relay team of Jamie W, Sam R, Lewis H and Ethan H ran superbly to win their heat and qualify for the final. Unfortunately in the final the team thought that they had finished in second place but were disqualified for a minor technicality.

Max R competed in the Year 8 boys' shot put and was just below his seasons best performance.

The Year 6 boys 4 x100 metres sprint relay team of Billy M, Louis U, William B and Sebastian P won their heat and finished in fifth position overall in the final.

The Year 8 girls' 4x100m relay team of Claudia B, Grace D, Daisy-Mai C and Hannah S finished 6th overall. It was a fantastic day for Daisy-Mai C who is now National IAPS Champion, having smashed the record in the Triple Jump (10.74m).

Well done also to Hannah S who competed in the hurdles event and qualified through to the final where she was positioned 4th in the country.

A fantastic day of athletics which will live long in the memory. It is especially pleasing that so many of our athletes are coached in School and go on to achieve such success at Championships like these.
