Senior team at the Tournament of Champions

Senior team at the Tournament of Champions

Posted: 14/11/2019

Two Bromsgrove teams, from the Senior and Prep Schools, have been competing at the Tournament of Champions at Yale University this week as part of the World Scholar's Cup.

140 schools hosted the region rounds of the 2019 World Scholar’s cup in May and Bromsgrove school was fortunate to have two teams progress and participate in the Global round in Den Haag, The Netherlands in July. In this Global round, 310 schools from fifty-one countries entered 600 teams and so it was very commendable that the two Bromsgrove School teams were positioned high enough in the rankings that they were considered good enough for the 2019 Tournament of Champions held in Yale University from 8th-12th November.

The Tournament of Champions brought together the best scholars from all six global rounds (Den Haag, Beijing, Nur Sultan, Sydney, Manila and Durban). The Bromsgrove senior school team consisted of George H, Shaan Singh S and Nicholas H, all Year 9 pupils.

Founded in 2007, the World Scholar's Cup is a global charitable enrichment initiative for students of all backgrounds from public and private schools all over the world. Their mission is to inspire a love of learning, a confidence in new skills, and a sense of belonging. Together they explore and get tested in questions on history, technology, literature, social studies and the arts and teams apply their learning both competitively and collaboratively.

Every round featured four competitive skill-building events:
Team Debate
Collaborative Writing
Scholar’s Challenge
Scholar’s Bowl

With six different themes:
Literature
Social Studies
Special Area
Science & Technology
Art & Music
History

625 Scholars from sixty countries representing the best of the best scholars from around the world arrived at Yale University to compete in the Tournament of Champions. The Senior team did well and positioned overall at 120 (out of 500 teams). They also won twenty-five medals including five gold and twenty silver medals for both individual and team efforts from the different categories. The team enjoyed their experience, learnt a lot and met some new overseas friends. This was the first time Bromsgrove School had entered any teams and only five UK schools were represented at this Tournament of Champions, so it really was a remarkable achievement.

Well done to both Bromsgrove teams (Please note: We are awaiting a report from the Prep team).
