Lent Term 2008

Routh Assembly Wednesday 19th March
Three senior debaters took part in the annual Michael Holt debate hosted by Bromsgrove and North Worcestershire Rotary Clubs. Alex Avern, Alex Harding and Joe Taylor competed against North Bromsgrove High School at Pine Lodge hotel in Bromsgrove in front of an audience of around 40. They were proposing the motion ‘That the media’s continuing focus on Diana, Princess of Wales, undermines the role of the monarch as head of state and Prince Charles’s position as heir apparent’. They skilfully dealt with the topic, engaging and persuading the audience with their very contrasting styles of delivery which complimented each other superbly. They went on to be pronounced the clear winners; well done. ~ especially Alex Avern

Monday 10th March

Thomas Cookes & School House Parents Association Annual Dinner Dance
This annual event was held at the Bromsgrove Hotel last Saturday 1st March.  The theme was a Masked Ball and on the night many of the guests took part by wearing a variety of masks.  The décor followed the theme and the tables were bedecked with huge mask shape balloons; menus with the a mask and feathers on and each of the raffle and auction prize s were wrapped in cellophane or bags complete with a mask

The girls looked fantastic in their finery and the boys in their tuxedos, well……!!  A great time was had by all students, parents, friends and staff.

My thanks to TC’s PA  for all their hard work but I must mention Colleen Budge who orchestrated the auction and was fantastic encouraging guests to part with their money; all in a good cause I might add.  Especial thanks go to Sue Smith for all her hard work in making the Bromsgrove Hotel look so spectacular.  On the night Alex Avern and Emma Johnson (TC joint Head of House) presented Sue with a bouquet of flowers in recognition and thanks for all her hard work.  Each year the event just seems to get better and better.  My thanks to all parents and guests who supported the evening.  The final amount raised to be shared between Thomas Cookes and School House is yet to be calculated but it looks as if the PA for each House will have a t least a £1000 each from the event.  After the auction and the raffle everyone danced the night away.  It was fun.  For those of you who attended we hope to see you next year and perhaps some of you who were disappointed as tickets sold out quickly, we will see you at next year’s dinner dance.

After an exhausting run Becky was placed 2nd in her age range. This a huge achievement and she will continue onto the next round of running which will be the English Schools championships held in March. The whole house wishes her good luck.

Netball
Last Saturday many netball matches were played against Dean Close. The Dean Close girl’s team visited Bromsgrove and 5 matches at different levels and ages were played.

Emily Deeley played for the 1st team in very stylish netball dresses which won by over 30 goals. Lois Unitt participated in the 2nd team which unfortunately lost 23-28. In the 3rd team Amber Capewell, Lucy Barwell, Sophie Sellers and Jenny Thomas (as captain) all played very well and with a great amount of teamwork were ahead after half time. But after becoming too complacent, Dean Close gradually pulled ahead and won by only 3 goals.

The U14As also won with the help of Victoria Stokes. Unfortunately the U14B’s lost very narrowly even though they all put in a great effort. Participants for this team were Alice Batham, Rebecca Noon (as captain), Emma Sellers, Holly Alsop, Harriet Walker and Daisy Perrey.

Chapel
On Ash Wednesday the whole school including T.C attended the special chapel service instead of activities, where hymns were sung and an inspiring sermon was delivered by the Deputy Headmaster Mr Bowen.

Twelfth Night
A School performance of Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night was produced with the help of Mrs Kenwood and shown for three nights this week. There was a preview of the play on Tuesday night and two grand performances on Wednesday night and Thursday night. Everything went perfectly fine on Thursdays and Tuesdays performances but unluckily a power cut 15 minutes before the end on Wednesday night, meant that the show was left at a curious cliff-hanger and was a very exciting experience for all involved. With Emma Henderson and Jodie Poole from TC’s lower sixth playing major roles and we look forward to future performances from both of them. Behind the scenes Jess James and Sadie Chana were helping putting on make up for all characters and even had to glue on comical beards to many of the young boys.

Debating
On Tuesday our two very skilled debaters Alex Avern and Dimple Divecha took part in the 3 Counties debate where they got through to the finals out of a large number of schools but were unfortunately beaten by very distinguished opposition. Their individual scores were posted on Thursday and T.C was extremely pleased to find that Alex was placed 3rd out of 32 contenders and with Dimple following in 8th place. This was excellent and Alex then continued with a further debate on Wednesday. She took part in the Oxford Union Debate at Solihull school where contestants had to execute 2 unprepared debates in Parliamentary style. This was very challenging and we compliment Alex in all her efforts.

Grades
Having published Lent First Grades last week TC were delighted to be told that TC’s U6 received the best Grades across the Senior School and that the House as a whole had the second best set of grades across the 11 Houses.  Well done TC!

Bromsgrove Valentines Day
As we break for Half Term today Bromsgrove School held their own Valentine’s Day.  Domin8 our own Young Enterprise Company organised the selling of roses and chocolates beautifully wrapped in triangular boxes and delivered them to Houses before Routh Assembly.  TC girls were delighted with the number of roses received in the House this morning. Studies were ablaze with vibrant roses and gorgeous chocolates, some from named admirers and some sent anonymously.

Ski Trip
A number of girls are heading off to Austria for a week’s skiing as we break for half term.  Younger girls in the House are quite envious and are looking forward to being in the Sixth Form when they can enjoy the skiing and après ski.  We look forward to seeing the photos when they return.

Junior house swimming
Junior house swimming took place on Monday the 28th of January. I would like to thank Mrs Buckingham and the PE staff for organising the event and encouraging us throughout.  Swimming is sometimes one of the less popular house events but never the less we did it in true TC spirit. I was really impressed with the way the girls were willing to pitch in, no matter what their swimming ability and I think this is a great quality to have. It shows true commitment to the house and they should be proud of them selves for what they have achieved on a personal level as well as for the house. The swimmers were: Alice Batham, Vicky Stokes, Harriet Walker, Danielle Finlay, Jessica James, Kate Marshall and Catherine Pitt. The girls swam brilliantly and we won five out of the eleven races. We narrowly lost overall to Hazeldene by two points – it was disappointing but everyone was enthusiastic and showed true house spirit. Well done TC! Jennie Morris Team Captain. The girls receive a House Commendation for their efforts.

Guiding
The 6th form Open morning took place last Saturday and meant that all 5th form attended different lectures about L6 subjects so that they could make their choices for next year. The option forms were handed out this week and are expected to be returned after half term so that the pupils can get the subjects which they desire. Many of the L6 took part in the guiding of potential newcomers and some even presented topics of their chosen subjects that they have been doing all of this year. Jodie Poole, Hannah Morris, Emma Wormington and Sarah Griffin guided people around the school whereas Alice Walters presented a topic on P.E and Sadie Chana and Jess Kingston helped demonstrate D.T projects.  The L6 also were given their subject choice forms for next year where they can drop a current AS subject and pick up another. Charlie Wesson in the U6 also answered many of the 5th forms questions at the R.S subject talk.

Debating
Following Alex Avern and Emma Johnson’s house debate against Elmshurst , the results came through on Thursday morning and they have been very successful. They’re through to the finals on the 17th March, and we wish them both good luck on their new motion.

The motion was, “this house believes that television adverts should be banned for children”, T.C was opposing this proposition saying that television adverts for children were a necessity and argued their reasons very competitively. On Friday 18th January – girls from the L6th and 5th form took part in the Senior House Swimming.  The girls competed well with Georgie Walters, Alice Walters, Amber Capewell and Elaina Williams winning the 4 x 25m front crawl relay and narrowly coming second in the 4 x 25m medley relay.  Special mention must go to Chloé Brazier who competed in the individual 25m breastroke (6th form) and Sophie Sellars in the 5th form individual 25m breastroke.  The cannon relay consisted of Lucy Barwell, Jodie Poole, Sophie Sellars, Chloé Brazier, Unjulie Maumi and Katie Budge - some fantastic volunteers who showed real house spirit by taking part.  TC were narrowly beaten by Hazeldeane, however are determined to win the trophy next year!

Welcome back!
Spirits in T.C were high this week, with conversation filled with Christmas memories and stories of New Year. All the girls have settled back into the school routine and are working as hard as ever and we hope to top the leader board when 1st grades are published for the 3rd time running!

Exams
The 5th form are busy preparing for mocks and the 6th form are preparing for January modules! We hope their revision is going well, and we wish them all luck!

YCA Competition Winner
Emma Wormington has won first place in the Young Farmers Association as ‘Junior member of the year’ in the county. The competition involved a formal interview in which Emma was asked about her beliefs and what her ambitions are. She also had to produce a portfolio of her achievements. Congratulations Emma!

T.C Masked Ball
Keep your calendar open for the 1st March at 7:15 because T.C is hosting the Annual Parents’ Association Dinner Dance with optional black tie and mask dress code. The dinner dance is open to all parents, 6th form students and their friends. This fabulous event is a lot of fun and very enriching for all who attend. The dance goes on until midnight and will be a great experience to just let loose! To add to the enjoyment there will be an exciting raffle prize drawn at the end of the evening. Act quickly as last year the tickets ran out very fast, you can acquire ticket prices and the wine list to pre-order your selection from a member of the T.C house. Letters about this event were posted to all parents at the end of last term.  Don’t delay; deadline for the “early bird” ticket prices is 31st January!
