December 17th
Dear Parents,
So to the last newsletter of 2007, and it was a fantastic final couple of weeks in the House. Spirits were high, and Final House Assembly was memorable for the amount of achievement on record.
Fourth Form Assembly
James Widdop (L4) and Ashley Jones (U4) were two of the captains reading reports of their rugby team’s season on Wednesday. They spoke superbly and confidently. Those Lupton boys commended for their involvement in team sports this term were:
U14a: Jordan Cooper, Harry Eastgate, Daniel Holles, Jean-Claude Massey, James Widdop
U14b: Declan Meddows
U15a: Matthew Shephard
U14b: Ashley Jones
U15c: Sam Hornsey
Journey’s End
There is no better way to pay tribute to this production full of Lupton boys than to quote directly from Mr Bowen’s newsletter last week:
“A highly talented cast powerfully captured the essence of RC Sheriff's play about life in the First World War trenches. The work consists of a series of conversations between soldiers at the Front; dialogue veers form the mundane to the profound, all against the backdrop of likely death. Ironically with little action, the play calls for mastery and understanding of lengthy dialogue and skilful interplay between characters. The cast more than rose to the challenge and this was one of the finest productions in the Studio in recent years. Simon Gummer was outstanding as Captain Stanhope; a powerful depiction of a leader under intense pressure in wartime. He moved effortlessly from small talk to deep emotions. Henry Newman was a revelation as Osborne; on stage for the first hour with a huge amount of dialogue, he was the lynchpin of the first half and brought to life even the most ordinary of situations. Both gave towering performances but so too Adam Kanas as Raleigh, the newly arrived Officer. His part was crucial too and he played the naïve, enthusiastic young soldier to perfection. They were brilliantly supported by Michael Pearce (who brought real comedy to his role as Trotter, Ed Westlake (a wonderfully droll cook whose timing was immaculate), Michael Palmer as Hibbett (one tremendous scene with Captain Stanhope where he wanted to desert) and Peter McCullagh (an excellent cameo as the Colonel). There was more excellent acting from Jonathan Allen, Femi Oluwole, William Wesson and Hugh Westlake. We also thank Mr Beet, the Director; for he and the Cast reached great heights in this Production. And not forgetting Ms Morgans on the set design.”

It was a stunning production. I attempted to send some pictures last week, though I think they are too big to send by email. They will appear on the House web page.
Daniel Holles and Jean-Claude Massey efforts for charity
Lower Fourth pupil Daniel Holles has recently been trying to help two charitable causes. Proceeds from Christmas cards have been sent to the Sumatran Rainforest Appeal, and he has also done much to aid the Bromsgrove Standard’s Shoebox Appeal for service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan. Well done Daniel – keep up the good work. Also, Jean-Claude Massey organised a pool tournament in House in aid of the term’s House charity Promise Dreams. We have raised over £200 for this charity in the House and some of us will visit to present the cheque next term.
Senior House Rugby
Unfortunately the semi-finals of the A and B team competition were postponed on Thursday due to frozen pitches.
Mince Pies and Drinks
A huge thank you to the Parent’s Association once again, but particularly to Mrs Hadley, for their sterling work on Friday afternoon following each of the Carol Services. Many parents popped in for a drink and a bite to eat; it was great to see so many of you just before Christmas for a catch up and something we must do again next year.
Final House Assembly
On Friday afternoon, before the Carol Services I summed up the Michaelmas Term and presented House ties, Countess’ Pennies and tutor gifts. We also said our farewells to Pete Kennebo (L6) who leaves us; I presented him with his leavers tie. House ties are presented at junior level to those who have been awarded five commendations or more; at least two must be academic commendations (in at least two different subjects) and at least two in other areas (House or School). A senior House tie is awarded for the same criteria but four commendations in total not five.
House Ties were awarded to:
Junior: Thomas Barwell, Sam Bolton, Michael Cox, Harry Eastgate, Harry Heath, Bradley Jones, Declan Meddows, William Sarjant, Benedict Shinner
Senior: William Bolton, Matthew Gwillam, Bobbie Lawrenson
The Countess’ Pennies for House spirit, camaraderie, participation and good endeavour in House were awarded to:
Lower Fourth
Thomas Barwell
Upper Fourth
Matthew Shephard
Fifth Form
William Bolton
Lower Sixth
Bobbie Lawrenson
Upper Sixth
Michael Pearce
Tutor gifts were presented to my brilliant tutor team – as well as gifts and flowers to Housekeeper Angela who has been a rock yet again this term – outstanding. I concluded by asking the House to reflect on any successes and mistakes they had made throughout the term, and asked them to treat them in much the same way – as experiences to learn from. In contemplating the Assembly, this reminded me of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” and the line about “triumph and disaster” and treating these “two imposters just the same”. I asked the Head and Deputy Head of House along with the Head Boy to help me read the poem to the House as a fitting way to end the Assembly, before we went off to enjoy the candlelit services and a mince pie back in the House.
My sincere best wishes for a fantastic Christmas and peaceful New Year. See you in 2008.

1 December 2007
Dear Parents,
Well the Christmas tree is up, and the day room is starting to get that “grotto” feel! I hope to see some of you at the Advent Service tomorrow in Chapel, and of course we have the Christmas Services to look forward to on the final day of term.
Michaelmas 2 Grades
These were much improved from the first grades of the term across the House. Commendations were awarded on Tuesday to those who had performed well. They are as follows:
House Commendations
Samuel Bolton, Harry Eastgate, Declan Meddows, Benedict Shinner, Sebastian Tanner, Jordan Glynne-Jones, William Wesson, Thomas Sarjant, Richard Waring, Charles Jones, Michael Pearce,
School Commendations
Thomas Barwell, Michael Cox, Harry Heath, Ashley Jones, Matthew Shephard, Thomas Silk, William Bolton, Matthew Cox, Matthew Gwillam, Richard Heath, Benjamin Hornsey, Hugh Westlake, Matthew Wix, Matthew Grice, Bobbie Lawrenson, Adam Kanas, James Skinner
Headmaster’s Commendations (Best in House)
Wande Abimbola, Jonathan Field
Congratulations to all.
Junior House Rugby
Last Saturday ALL the fourth form took part in the Junior House Rugby Competition in either the A or B team squads. This was a fantastic effort and all have been commended. The A team won all of their group matches except one, by a one try margin to Walters House, who had won all of their games too. This meant we played off against Walters in the Final and ran out of steam losing by two scores. It was a fantastic team effort however, and all the spectators (staff, pupils and parents) were very impressed by the commitment shown. The B team won two and lost two in their group matches, placing them third in the group, and in the 3rd/4th play-off against School House. We had beaten School in the group stages, and we proved too strong for them again with tries from Eddie Cartwright and Ashley Jones. So, 2nd and 3rd – a really superb House effort.

Mince Pies – Friday 14th December
On the final day of term, the Junior School Service commences at 3.15pm and the Senior Service at 4.30pm. The House will be open following each service for parents collecting to come and share a drink and mince pie with House staff and pupils for Christmas. Please drop me a note to let me know if you might pop in – it would be great to see you – but will need to know an approximate number for catering.
Charity Efforts
This term’s charity in House has been Promise Dreams (based in Wolverhampton – supporting families and children with terminal illness). Last week, the Charity Reps organised a Sixth Form leg waxing auction! Don’t ask! However, around £175 was raised – great effort. Secondly, Lower Fourth Jean-Claude Massey is organising a pool competition which will hopefully raise our total over the £200 barrier. Will keep you all posted.
Journey’s End
Most of the cast and crew for this production of Journey’s End are Luptonians, and the performances are this Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm in the Drama Studio. The set is superb, designed by House Tutor and Head of Art, Ms Morgans. Tickets are free and can be claimed via Charles Jones (U6) or Mrs Kenward - pkenward@bromsgrove-school.co.uk
I hope some of you can come.
Rugby News
Matthew Cox and Jack Pons have their final U16 and U18 Midlands training weekends respectively this weekend – we wish them both well.
That’s all for now – looking forward to catching up with many of you prior to Christmas.
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham

24th November
Dear Parents,
Only three weeks to go – it’s flown by! Plenty to pack in though before the end of term and I look forward to catching up with some or all of you before the end of term for a mince pie!
Michaelmas 2 Grades
These grades were published in House during the week, and of course can be found on ePortal by using your username and password. There were huge improvements across the board, and on the whole I was very pleased. Many pupils had improved by significant margins on average, and attainment grades are on the up. A small minority will work with their tutor closely using a monitoring card to help them, but many will be commended either by the House, School or in two cases, the Headmaster. These will be announced at House Assembly on Tuesday.
Lupton Ball
A huge thank you to the House Parent’s Association, but Jane Gummer in particular, for the outstanding success that was the Lupton Ball. Around 140 pupils, parents, friends and staff came together at the Hilton Hotel last Saturday and enjoyed fantastic food (if a little late, in one tables case!), live music and great company. It really was a resounding success, and we look forward to the next one! I know the Upper Sixth in particular valued the evening highly and enjoyed themselves very much. There are a handful of pictures attached.

Junior House Rugby
This competition takes place this afternoon. The House shirts arrived just in time – thank goodness! Parents are welcome – first match 1pm. Reports and pictures next week. There is an A and B competition and most boys in the Fourth Form are involved – great stuff!
Christmas Services
On the last day of term from 3.15pm the two Christmas services take place. Lower Fourth Harry Heath has been asked to read at the junior service which is a great honour – I look forward to hearing him.
Advent Service – Sunday 2nd December
Please email pbowen@bromsgrove-school.co.uk if you wish to reserve places at next weekend’s Advent Service – 6pm start. It will be candlelit – very special.
Bags
Parents and pupils are reminded that school bags should be black and plain.
Have a great week.
Best wishes,Paul Greetham

November 19th
Dear Parents,
The week started with a very poignant Remembrance service on Sunday. The boys looked and behaved superbly and in accordance with this important occasion. Michael Palmer sang superbly during the Choir's Anthem - a proud moment for Lupton - a moving solo.
Duty Week
This week was Lupton's duty week. I took chapel on Wednesday with eight boys, namely Michael Cox, Jordan Cooper, James Widdop, Sam Bolton, Bradley Jones, William Sarjant, Wande Abimbola and Peter McCullagh. Our theme was Children in Need and the boys read superbly - crystal clear, they did the House proud. Similarly on Thursday in Routh Hall Assembly, William Bolton read fantastically well. All have been commended. The House raised nearly £140 for Children In Need on Friday through wearing own clothes. The standard fare was £1 - we asked for £2! Always looking to go one better!
Michaelmas 2 Grades
The second effort and attainment grades of the year will be published on Tuesday / Wednesday this coming week. Ask your son about them or check on ePortal in due course.
Lupton Ball
I have dug out the bow tie for the Lupton Ball this evening at the Hilton Hotel, Bromsgrove. The Sixth Form cannot wait (and a few parents too!). It should be a grand affair, the first one of it's kind for sometime. I will endeavour to take as many photographs as possible; a full report in the next newsletter.
Rugby Success
Matthew Cox (F5) has been selected for the Midlands U16 Development weekend having played superbly in his North Midlands rugby matches. Matthew follows in the long standing tradition of outstanding rugby players in the House. Good luck Matt - next stop England!
Cambridge Interviews
Adam Kanas (Modern Languages), Michael Palmer and Femi Oluwole (both English) have had fantastic news this week. They have been granted interviews at their respective colleges at Cambridge University. They take place in early December. Great news! Well done lads.
Flat Screen Monitor arrives!
The Parents Association have bought the House a flat screen monitor to act as an active notice board for pupils. The TV allows me to post notices as and when I need to, and display up to date photographs as a slideshow. It already looks great, and it's not connected yet!
Junior House Rugby
This takes place next Saturday (24th November) from 1pm onwards. There is an A and B team, therefore most, if not ALL, of the Fourth Form will be involved. House rugby shirts arrive on Monday or Tuesday this week. If ordered, I require a cheque for £30 made payable to Bromsgrove School before I release the shirt to your son. Parents are very welcome next Saturday - it is not often parents get a chance to see such House competitions. believe me, the boys take them very seriously!
A Few Plugs . . . . .
Firstly, Choral Society has kicked off on Tuesday evenings from 6pm until 7.30pm in Routh Hall. ALL are welcome, parents, relatives, friends, pupils - the lot! Five Luptonians took part last year - it's a great experience.
Secondly, on Monday 10th December the Christmas Concert takes place in Routh Hall at 7.30pm. Email Miss Coulson on mcoulson@bromsgrove-school.co.uk if you require tickets - always a great night.
And finally, on Sunday 2nd December, there is an Advent Service (purely voluntary) for pupils, parents, relatives and friends in the chapel at 6pm. Please email Mr Bowen on pbowen@bromsgrove-school.co.uk if you wish to attend.
A final plea to keep letting me know of appointments, driving lessons or known absence ASAP. There have been a few instances of pupils telling me at the last minute or me not knowing at all of pupils leaving school for whatever reason. Please let me know with as much notice as possible.
Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Until next time.
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham

12th November
Dear Parents,
It’s that time of year again – Upper Sixth crossing fingers about University applications and really starting to contemplate the world outside Bromsgrove School. Lower Sixth have their feet firmly “under the table” in their AS courses, and it’s a time to get the head down with coursework, and vigorous study. Fifth Form have mocks around the corner and should be very mindful of their notes and revision materials. Upper Fourth’s study habits should now be maturing, in an attempt to balance their time between their GCSE courses and inevitable course work. Lower Fourth are still settling, and yet appear to have been here forever and a day – testament to their attitude and approach – they are a popular and lively year group in the House. So what’s been happening this week?
Parent’s Association & The Lupton Ball
The PA met on Monday evening to discuss arrangements for the Ball next Saturday (17th) at The Hilton Hotel, Bromsgrove. There are a handful of tickets still available. Please email Jane Gummer on jgummer@bromsgrove-school.co.uk if you wish to grab the last few. On a separate note, a few of you gents suggested that you might join the PA committee – it’s pretty much an all female affair at the moment, bar the Chairman and myself. When the Chairman leaves in July it’s just me! HELP!
Remembrance Sunday
A reminder that the Services take place tomorrow at 9.45am (Fourth Forms) and 10.45am (Fifth and Sixth Forms). Pupils should register in the House at 9.30am or 10.30am in School Suits. Parents and siblings most welcome. Attendance compulsory for pupils.
Musical Success
Great news for Michael Pearce – he has been selected for the National Youth Wind Orchestra for another year. Well done Michael!
Junior House Debating
On Thursday afternoon Harry Heath (L4) and Wande Abimbola (U4) represented the House in the Junior Debating Competition. We await with interest whether they have progressed to the next round!
Dress for Boys
Here are a couple of points regarding dress as the weather is getting colder.
Sweaters - Navy blue & V Neck for Fourth & Fifth Form (available from School Shop). Dark coloured sweaters & V Neck (black, dark grey, navy) for Sixth Form - not necessarily from the School Shop. Please note that the tie should not be obscured by any sweater, i.e., must be a V neck.
Scarves - There is a Sixth Form Scarf available from the School Shop, as well as a scarf for the Fifth Form and below. These are the only scarves permitted.
Next on the horizon is Junior House Rugby in two weeks (Saturday 24th November). Parents are of course very welcome to come down and watch. There will be an A and B team competition – so lots of boys will be taking part.
Until next time,
Paul Greetham
Housemaster
22nd October
Dear Parents,
An abundance of House and School spirit this week! It has been a pleasure to be around Lupton this week – the boys have been high on the House Song and Rugby competitions, and we have all thoroughly enjoyed their company. Here’s what happened over the last seven days:
House Song Competition
Well the boys say we “was” robbed – I am totally impartial of course and diplomatic! The adjudicator gave us 14 marks out of 20, two behind boy’s winners Walters House and one behind Lyttelton House. Our effort was magnificent – it was musical, tight and brilliantly led by Michael Pearce, indeed if you follow this link you will be able to see for yourself! It was caught on camera and all the House efforts can be found in here on YouTube. Judge for yourself! http://uk.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=6FA1B63F85BFF467
I was terrifically proud of the whole House. Rehearsals were always well attended and it meant a lot to them – as I’m sure you’ve discovered at home! Oh well – the run had to come to an end someday . . . not that this is any consolation! Oakley won the girls competition by the way.

Senior House Rugby
Results didn’t get much better yesterday as the Senior House Rugby Competition got underway. I was delighted that we fielded an A and B team, such was the desire of the boys to play for the House. Results were as follows:
Vs Walters LOST 7-0
Vs Lyttelton DRAW 12-12
Vs Elmshurst LOST 7-0
Vs Housman LOST 15-0
Unfortunately, although the matches were all very tight, it means we don’t qualify for the A competition semi-finals, although the B team did, winning one and losing one. These take place in December. Pictures attached.
Lower Fourth Cross Country
Whilst our rugby players were working hard, the Lower Fourth ran around them! This is an individual race involving the whole year group – the House Championships take place next term. However, had there been a team trophy Lupton would’ve won!! Special mention to Harry Heath (5th) and Jean-Claude Massey (7th) who ran superbly.

Llanwrtyd Wells
Last weekend, many pupils and staff travelled to this - the smallest town in Britain. The town were awarding the School the keys to the town, and to mark the event, a concert was held on Saturday evening and a memorial service took place on Sunday morning. Well done to Michael Palmer and Michael Pearce who played on Saturday evening, and the latter led the Corps of Drums admirably on Sunday morning. Also involved on Saturday evening with the Jazz Band or on Sunday morning with the Corps of Drums were Edmund and Hugh Westlake, William Bolton, William Wesson and Rupert Harris. Well done boys!
North Midlands Rugby
Congratulations to Matthew Cox who started at Hooker for the North Midlands U16 team last night vs Warwickshire at Bromsgrove RFC. For those who don’t know, this is a very high standard of representative rugby – next stop Midlands and then England. Matthew has done incredibly well to get this far and we wish him well for the matches over Half Term.
I have encouraged the boys all day today (Friday) to take home all books that they will need over half term. I am around for most of the holiday – in an emergency for a folder or text book for prep, then drop me an email and we can arrange a pick up I’m sure! Hopefully it won’t come to it, and they have taken most things (including games kit) home with them. Please encourage them to take some time for prep this holiday – some is absolutely necessary given the long half term break.
It has been a jam packed first half of term, and the boys have been outstanding overall. We can all be proud of their achievements, and new pupils are really starting to make their mark. The Lupton spirit of loyalty and commitment is alive and well. I hope to see it in abundance in November / December – plenty of news to come!
Enjoy the break if you have one.
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham

October 15th
Dear Parents,
Well it seems that the “Week Six” bug has struck! Quite a few House absences this week – keep up the doses of vitamin C!!!! Here’s what’s happened this week.
Michaelmas 1 Grades
As I mentioned last time, grades were pretty good first up, but for many there is room for improvement. Many have been commended in the House (for an excellent effort that didn’t warrant a School Commendation), by the School (for a grade average of higher than 2.0) or by the Headmaster (for the two people deemed by House staff to be “best in House”). A small minority, it was decided, needed some more specific lesson by lesson feedback as to their progress, by means of a “green” monitoring card. This is checked by the pupil’s tutor or me each day – some even asked to be on a card, which is a sign of maturity. For those who are new to the School, if major improvements are not seen in effort by the next grades, then the Head of Pupil Progress for the relevant year group may advise a Yellow Card (reporting to them each day) or in more serious cases a Red Card (reporting to the Assistant Head Academic each day). Parents should be aware that Internal Suspension may follow if the Red Card is not deemed to have been effective. Fortunately, Lupton boys have stayed well clear of Red Cards or Internal Suspensions for some time – long may it continue!!
Commendations have been awarded as follows (these can also be seen on ePortal):
Headmaster Commendations
Harry HeathBobbie Lawrenson
School Commendations
Wande Abimbola
William Bolton
Matthew Cox
Jamie Rymer
Hugh Westlake
Matthew Wix
Jonathan Field
Peter McCullagh
Henry Newman
House Commendations
Tom Barwell
Greg Brazier
Michael Cox
Harry Eastgate
Daniel Holles
Declan Meddows
William Sarjant
Benedict Shinner
Sam Hornsey
Matthew Shephard
Thomas Silk
Richard Heath
Alexander Watts
Tutors are making the following observations with regard to prep – these are some of the things you might discuss at home:
- A “boy” habit is to leave prep until the night before it is due. We are encouraging as much as possible to complete the prep on the night that the prep timetable sets out – usually the day it has been set.
- Some boys are not very good at using topic / subject dividers in ring binders
- Most boys (we are checking very regularly) write their prep in their diaries each day, but fail to state when it is to be completed by – an important bit of information!
- Some boys have indicated that they work in their bedrooms whereby there may be other distractions. A specific work space at home may improve focus and therefore quality of their work.
- Another “boy” habit is to rush through a prep, and either by sloppy or poorly presented work or the missing out of easier questions, the subject teacher will pick up upon this and mark down or give poor / average effort grades. We find that this is one of the main differences (I’m generalising!) between boys and girls; girls (on the whole) do not watch the clock when it comes to prep – they will want to ensure it is the very best it can be. Please encourage your son to spend the full 35 or 40 minutes on a given prep, to ensure presentation as well as content is of the highest quality possible.
Paintball
Attached are pictures of last week’s superb day at the National Paintball Fields, Sutton Coldfield. Forty eight Lupton boys (out of sixty eight) travelled, and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to shoot the living daylights out of each other and House staff! Miss A was her usual “kamikaze” self, whilst the Housemaster sat tight and picked off the opposition at will (in my dreams!). Adam Kanas and Simon Gummer led the two Lupton teams, who cruised through to the Final to face each other, after the Walters contingent limped into the Losers Final (bad luck Wilkins – again!). Gummer’s lot played the more tactically astute game in the Final to take victory. A great day.

Words and Music
Adam Kanas and Simon Gummer read superbly on Thursday evening in the Housman Room. The theme was seasons and the House played host to the half time interval. Well done boys.
Senior House Rugby
We will be entering an A and B team into this Thursday’s House Rugby group matches. The finals take place in December. The Head of House is on the case and more than 20 boys will have the opportunity to represent the House in this ten-a-side tournament. We could be strong this year – let’s see!
House Song
Well all the talking is nearly over. Rehearsals have really stepped up this week and Greased Lightnin’ is taking shape from what I can hear! There are a few finishing touches to make. Please be aware that this Wednesday’s competition will mean that School ends at 5.30pm and not 5pm.
Rugby hosting vs Marist College, Canberra
Many of you were kind enough to host at least one boy from the visiting tourists this week, and the House was represented superbly in the two matches on Thursday – the 1st XV match of course was played at Worcester Sixways on the 1st XV pitch. A fantastic experience for Henry Newman, Jack Pons and Matthew Cox – but well done too to Pete Kennebo, Bobbie Lawrenson, Matthew Gwillam, Jake Broadhurst, Robin Hadley and Charles Jones who were all involved in some way either playing or hosting or both.
The House welcomed back Alex Ponsonby (U6) on Friday following a five week absence due to a serious road traffic accident in early September. It was great to have him back and see him well on the road to recovery.
Until next time. Best wishes,
Paul Greetham
Housemaster
PS – I have asked the boys to replenish the House stocks of tea bags and sugar. They get through them very quickly! Your support is appreciated!
October 8th
Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe that there is less than two weeks left of this Half Term, but things aren’t slowing down and there is much to report this week.
Michaelmas 1 Grades
The first grades were published in House on Tuesday afternoon. There are some very positive starts, particularly from new pupils to the House – plenty of room for improvement across the board however. Tutors have already began the process of discussing with tutees, and you can discuss at home by accessing them from ePortal with your username and password – which I hope you have now all received. If you haven’t or have mislaid them than please contact Mrs Gallois at sgallois@bromsgrove-school.co.uk and she will be pleased to forward them to you. Commendations (House, School and Headmaster) will be announced on Tuesday in House Assembly.
Lupton Ball
I hope you received the booking form for the Ball on Saturday 17th November at the Hilton Hotel, Bromsgrove. Places are going very quickly, please do get your replies WITH payment as soon as you can, or else you might be disappointed! It promises to be an excellent evening.
House Song
Final rehearsals are now booked for Routh and “in House” practice can be heard daily from the Day Room. Things are hotting up, and it’s starting to take great shape! Lots of work to do before the big day though, a week on Wednesday.
Junior House Debating
Following the success of Hugh Westlake and William Bolton in this competition last year, Lupton have a lot to live up to. We have every faith that this year’s debaters Harry Heath (L4) and Wande Abimbola (U4) will do us proud. They were presented with the motion on Friday – “this House believes that people should not ride bicycles”. We are FOR the motion and pit or wits against Mary Windsor very soon after Half Term. I am assured hefty research is already underway to counter the green argument!
Lower Fourth Field Day
The Lower Fourths enjoyed a superbly rewarding day on Wednesday as they walked up and down the Malvern Hills. No-one got lost (terrifically!!) and all were returned safe and sound (and very tired) on Wednesday evening. Attached is a photograph of one of the groups including two Lupton boys James Widdop and Sam Bolton.

Upper Sixth Meal
Every year the Upper Sixth pupils organise a trip per term to a local restaurant for an evening out with the House Staff. Last night, eleven boys and four staff had a lovely meal at Pizza Express in Birmingham. The boys were excellent company and a credit to themselves and the House. Already looking forward to the next one!
Words and Music
This Thursday in the Housman Room at 7.30pm, the theme of “seasons” is presented by a number of pupils by means of prose, poetry or music. It is always a fantastic evening, and Simon Gummer and Adam Kanas represent the House this year. No tickets required – just turn up!
North Midlands Rugby
Three pupils Matthew Cox (U16), Jack Pons and Bobbie Lawrenson (U18) have been selected for North Midlands rugby squads. A fantastic achievement and the House is very proud of them all.
Sixth Form Driving Lessons
A reminder to parents that any driving lessons booked during School time must not interfere with a student’s timetable. Only the driving tests (theory and practical) can be booked at anytime. If you book a block of driving lessons for your son, then please inform me in advance so I can then give leave permission slips to your son on the days in question.
Saturday Fixtures
Can I please stress that Saturday fixtures are a compulsory School commitment. Only in an exceptional circumstance should a student miss a fixture, and permission should be sought from the House by the Monday of the week leading up to the fixture. If injured or ill, then a note to cover the absence should be received prior to the fixture. On Saturday mornings, if there is a last minute problem with your son missing his fixture then please contact Mr Abrahams (Master i/c Rugby) on 07824 722499 to discuss. If a student misses a fixture with no prior notice then the School will take this very seriously. Lupton parents have so far, been very supportive of this whole process – thank you.
That’s all for now – any good news you think I should know about – please filter through! Looking forward to getting hammered by trigger happy paintballers tomorrow morning! For those coming, 8.30am in the sports hall car park – old clothes and trainers essential! Back around 3.15pm.
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham
Housemaster
Week 4, 29th September
Dear Parents,
The House song is ringing out now two or three times a week. Organiser and conductor Michael Pearce is happy with progress and more plans are afoot to make this the best yet! It is particularly encouraging to see and hear the Lower Fourth pupils bellowing out to the Grease classic! They follow in a long line of singing tradition. On that note, in Chapel on Wednesday during whole School hymn practice, new Director of Music Mr Kingston singled out Lupton as making an “angelic” sound!! Hmmmm!?! . . . . I’ll leave you as parents to ponder on that one! Your son . . . angelic? Chapel does wonders for teenage boys!
First Grades
Michaelmas Term (1) Grades are published in the coming week. For new parents, please encourage your son to write these down in his prep diary for you to perhaps look at and discuss at home. Alternatively, they are published on your son’s ePortal homepage, which you can access via the web at www.bromsgrove-school.co.uk/ePortal. If you haven’t been sent your username and password for accessing this site, then please let me know and I can arrange for it to be sent to you. A reminder that your son’s School information appears on ePortal, including his timetable, members of staff, and commendation and detention details. Over the course of the year, all grades and reports will appear electronically on your son’s site. For info. only reports and tutor letters get sent to you as hard copies – grades are only accessible via your son telling you, or ePortal.
Paintball
Our trip with Walters takes place next Sunday. Any final submissions of consent form and cheque should be with me on Monday 1st October.
Harvest Festival
The School Harvest Service is this Monday (1st) at 8.50am. SCHOOL SUITS MUST BE WORN all day on Monday. The Lupton collection of produce for Harvest was staggering – the computer room looked like a Tesco’s warehouse on Thursday! We could’ve fed a small army! The House can be very proud of its first effort for charity of the term – led by Messrs Broadhurst and Lawrenson (L6). Well done Lupton!
Locking Up Kit
Please encourage your son to have a small padlock and key (plus spares) in order to secure his games kit and other items in the lockers provided in House. I can hold spares. Many boys take advantage of their locker – however the majority DO NOT. To avoid issues regarding items going missing, it is far easier if items are locked, rather than lying around in studies.
Upper Sixth Meal
This Friday 5th October, the Upper Sixth and some of the House tutors will be going out to Pizza Express in Birmingham. Last year, two or three nights were arranged by the Head of House, and it is a great way for the top of the House and staff to chat informally about the House, School and their plans for the future. Pictures next week.
Lupton Ball
I am still waiting for a booking form for the House Ball on 17th November. As soon as I have it, I will forward it to you all.
Pastoral Parents Evening
It was great to see so many Lupton parents at this evening on Wednesday. The staff involved felt that it was a very constructive evening, and one which both parties feel should be repeated in the future. Safe use of the internet was discussed, as well as Sister Harris from the Health Centre, giving some excellent advice on how sensitive issues might be dealt with by School and Home alike. www.childnet-int.org is a great site to visit for more information on children’s safe use of the net. The “Know it all for Parents” CD Rom resource was handed out on the night – although follow the links on the Childnet website and you will be able to see the same content there. For info. Childnet are presenting to Lower and Upper Fourth in the next month or so.
Until next week.
Best wishes,

Week 3, 24th September
Dear Parents,
Three weeks gone already – time is really flying so far this term. I’m delighted to report that all new pupils appear to be very settled and comfortable in Lupton. Old pupils are back into routine now and the vast majority are loving the new week, and into a pattern with prep. There have been a very small minority who have picked up “faculty” detentions which are handed out for late prep or work that is clearly not up to the standard of the individual. A reminder that Lower Fourth pupils should spend 35 minutes on each prep and Upper Fourth and Fifth Form, 40 minutes.
In speaking to many parents and continuing my work on internet safety, it is clear pupils across the School can be significantly distracted in their prep time by their own or house PC. MSN Messenger (chat facility) and the variety of social networking sites (Facebook, Bebo, etc) can be a pull away from dedicated work time. ChildNet give very sound advice on this subject. They suggest an agreed work station in the home, and the house PC to be situated in a “common” area. I know at least one Lupton parent is coming to the Pastoral Parents Evening this Wednesday, and amongst other presentations, I will be talking about internet safety within School and out. Places are available via Mr Bowen at pbowen@bromsgrove-school.co.uk
County Representation
At U16 level, Matthew Cox has been selected for the Worcestershire Rugby Squad, as have Bobbie Lawrenson and Jack Pons at U18 level. The House are very proud of their achievements. Well done boys!
Quiz Night
Around 80 pupils and parents attended the first PA event of the year last night. Eleven (quite large!) teams battled it out and it went right down to the wire! In the end, The Indecisives were crowned the Lupton Buffs! Everyone enjoyed a meal at half time, followed by some fantastic puddings made by members of the Committee. The cheesecake and pavlova were particularly special and the remains are currently sitting in Greetham’s fridge! The Parent’s Association “AGM” took place during the evening also, and there was a call from the Chairman for more gentlemen on the Committee – please let one of us know if you are interested. WATCH THIS SPACE for details of buying tickets for the LUPTON BALL on Saturday 17th November.
Harvest Festival
The House has two new Charity Representatives in Jake Broadhurst and Bobbie Lawrenson. They announced in House Assembly on Thursday that, for the upcoming School service for Harvest, we need to collect some produce for this year’s worthy cause. I would be very grateful if you could help your son find some “long life” foods from your kitchen cupboards. Lupton lead the way on this usually, and we need the Chapel stocked by Thursday – please be generous. Many thanks.
House Rugby
Senior House rugby has been postponed from this Wednesday to the Thursday immediately before half term in October. These will be the group matches and the Finals take place at the end of term. Junior House rugby takes place on Saturday 24th November. Parents are very welcome to attend – more details to follow.
Many of you are giving plenty of notice for absence which is fantastic, please keep this coming. Indeed, in all aspects, including checking and signing of prep diaries, the boys are very fortunate to have such supportive and interested parents – the House staff appreciates your input and communications with us.
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham

Week 2, September 17th
Dear Parents,
The usual glorious September weather persists, and another week has flown by such is the pace of the new week. Feedback on the new structure appears positive, although some are missing the final ten minutes of lunch!! Here goes . . .
House Song
Rehearsals got underway this week for Greased Lightnin’!!! Early signs are very positive as musical maestro Michael Pearce rallied the troops for a good listen to the track and some hearty run throughs singing along! A good sound to begin with – I’m sure there are plenty of tricks up his sleeve though! Watch this space!
Quiz Night
We come together for the first PA event of the year next Friday evening from 7.30pm. I have had several replies already, but there is room for plenty more!! Please find the booking form attached once more – closing date this Wednesday morning in order to book catering. It’s a family affair – no need for baby sitters – unless you don’t want to bring the boys of course!
Paintball & House Shirts
Plenty of paintballers are already signed up and paid for, and please keep the consent forms and cheques coming this week for the trip on 8th October. I have ordered some new House rugby shirts for those who signed up. I will let them know when payment is required; it will not be until delivery.
Parents Pastoral Evening
On Wednesday 26th September from 7.15pm in Routh Hall, the Deputy Headmaster invites all parents to an evening of presentations and open forum on specific areas of concern to us as a School and undoubtedly you as parents. Such issues as bullying, safe use of the internet, self-harm, etc will be on the agenda, plus any issues you feel are worth raising. It is envisaged that this would be a pro-active evening, whereby the School and parents can work together to combat some of the issues facing young people today. Please email Mr Bowen pbowen@bromsgrove-school.co.uk if you wish to attend, or indeed to me, and I will pass on your interest. I will be presenting on the safe use of the internet; I look forward to seeing some of you there.
Journey’s End
Assistant Housemaster Mr Beet and an all Lupton cast, are currently rehearsing hard for a production of Journey’s End by R.C. Sherriff. It will hit the stage in December and I know it will be a great show. I will keep you informed of dates.
School Representation
It is tremendous to see that 44 out of the 68 in the House are representing the School at rugby this afternoon in fixtures. Whatever the level, this ethos of participation in a team is great to see, and I am delighted that so many have been selected.
Locker Padlocks
I strongly recommend that your son has a padlock for his locker. There can be no doubt then, that particularly items of games kit will not go “walkies” as they might in unsecured lockers. I am happy to look after spare keys in the office.
Bags & Hymn Books
A quick reminder that all boys are required to use a BLACK bag or briefcase around School to carry books. A small minority get into the habit however of not using a bag at all, and this can cause havoc regarding their organisation and is when books go missing. Secondly, a hymn book is compulsory for all – can you please check, as we will, that your son owns one. If not, I would be grateful for your encouragement to purchase one from the school shop.
Please do inform me of any worries or concerns you have about anything – or perhaps even some good news that your son would be too embarrassed to speak about!!
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham

Lupton House Parents Association Quiz Night
Week 1
Dear Parents,
At the time of writing, the first Saturday morning activity programme is underway, and the boys appear happy and content with their choices. Most of the House will be in on Saturdays for either activities or fixtures, and I am pleased that the majority appear to want to get as much out of the programme as possible.
The House has had a busy but very positive feel this week. We are all adapting to a new week, but it hasn’t taken anything away from the atmosphere of the House or indeed the spirit of the boys.
So what about the first week!?! Hectic - time flied! Lots of questions about where – when – who . . . and that was just me! The Lower Fourth year group and new pupils have settled quickly, and have soon got into the habit of checking their bags and prep diaries at the end of the day, to ensure that they are organised – with a little help from the tutors. Again, I would request that all parents of L4, U4 and 5th Form sign their son’s prep diary every weekend at least – or otherwise anytime you check it on any given day.
Saturday Mornings
The House have been briefed on registration details, times and venues for Saturday mornings. They also have been told what to wear. In summary, the major points are:
- 9am - Registration for Activity One and all those in at the start of the day in the House.
- 9.15am – 10.30am Activity One
- 10.30am – 10.40am Registration for Activity Two for all new arrivals
- 10.45am – 12pm Activity Two
- 12.10pm – 1pm Lunch
- 12.45pm – 12.55pm Registration for Activity Three for all new arrivals
- Those pupils on fixtures should register in the House ten minutes before their meet time (home or away) if they have just arrived in School
- Pupils on away fixtures must wear School uniform for the journey to and from the fixture
- Pupils taking part in home fixtures arrive at the meet time in School tracksuits over games kit
- When I am at home for a fixture, the House will be locked at approx. 4.30pm – 5pm
- When I am away with a fixture, the House will be locked at approx. 3pm – 3.15pm – the boys will be informed of this, but should get into the habit of taking books home with them on Fridays for weekend preps
- ABSENCE – Please call the House extension (229) between 8am and 9am on Saturday mornings if your son is ill and cannot attend activities. Please leave a message if no-one picks up
- IMPORTANT – Now that the activities have been selected, the boys should now honour that commitment week in, week out. In exceptional circumstances, and you know of a reason that your son cannot attend activities, I would be grateful of notification by the Monday of the week in question at the latest. Parents and pupils are reminded that Saturday fixtures are a compulsory commitment (all teams and replacements) and pupils will only be excused fixtures in very special circumstances (e.g., close family wedding).
Absence from a fixture
If your son only comes in for fixtures on Saturdays and he cannot play for any reason (illness or injury most probably) at the last minute, then please contact Mr Abrahams (Master i/c Rugby) on 07824 722499 to discuss.
Weekday absence
A reminder that Mon-Fri absence from School should be reported to the House (ext. 229) between 7.45am and 8.20am. If you know in advance of an absence from School then please email me or send me a note via your son. At least 24 hours notice would be appreciated.
Parents Association Events
The first PA meeting of the year took place on Thursday, and we are all excited about two upcoming events. On Friday 21st September, we are holding a Quiz Night in the Marquee from 7.30pm. I have emailed details previously, but please let me know if you require a hard copy. Please get these replies coming in ASAP. Secondly, the first Lupton Ball will be held on Saturday 17th November at the Hilton Hotel, Bromsgrove. Booking forms will be circulated very soon. Prices are £35 per head for adults, and £32 for pupils. Tickets are very limited so be quick when the forms are circulated! We are on the search for quality auction items – particularly those that “money can’t buy”. Please get in touch if you have any ideas.
Paintball / House rugby shirts
Many of you will have already received notification of our Paintball Day with Walters House on Sunday 7th October. It’s a great day and I would like to encourage as many of the House to attend as possible. The cost is £27 and the letters and consent forms have been issued.
A list has appeared in House for House rugby shirt orders. These cost £30, are the same design as last year, and I will order this time next week. There is no need to send money in for the shirt just yet – if your son would like one and you are happy, then he should just sign up for now.
House Song / House Photograph
The House have provisionally chosen “Grease Lightnin’” as our entry this term! The theme is “weather”, and I can see there being much scope with this song to entertain and perform to our best! It can be subject to change so watch this space – rehearsals get going this week – all must sing!
The 2007/8 House photograph is taken this Tuesday. I will inform you when they arrive and orders can be taken. Hair and dress should be spot on this Tuesday (it rarely isn’t!) but please support at home.
Wireless Access
Lupton went wireless this week! Pupils are free to use their laptops around the House – details of the settings required are posted in the House. Pupils have been told however, that the laptop is their responsibility and should be secured in their locker when not in use, or of course carried around lessons with them. Although the wireless network is separate to that of the main Bromsgrove network, all the usual restrictions and filters have been applied.
ePortal
The School database, as many of you are aware is accessible via the web at home or at work. The web address is:
www.bromsgrove-school.co.uk/ePortal
Old parents will have received their log in details last year, although I am told that these will be resent very soon, and will obviously include new parents. Obvious benefits of viewing your son’s page, include looking at reports and grades information / timetables / commendation and detention information and attendance records.
Apologies for a lengthy first newsletter – but that gets a lot of housekeeping out of the way!
As always, please contact me on extension 229 or by email if you wish to discuss any House related matter.
Best wishes,
Paul Greetham
