Elmshurst update February 2008

The first half of the Lent term has been a very busy one.

Ryan Cleary captained the school hockey team that got to the final of the national indoor tournament. The team consisted of the following Elmshurst players: Robin Volk, Constantin Illies and Niklas Bellinger. The team easily won all their pool games and beat Millfield 8:4 in the semi-final. In the final Constantin Illies brought the score to 4:4 against Southgate Hockey Club at full time. Unfortunately Bromsgrove lost the ‘sudden death’ penalty shoot out but finished the best placed school team in the tournament. This was a massive achievement for all the boys concerned, with Ryan Cleary giving excellent leadership and playing on with a broken bone in his hand.

In the Junior Inter-house competition Nat Wilde captained a team that was praised by all staff involved for being the team with the best house spirit. Despite being a team of mainly non-hockey players the boys drew with Walters and managed to beat School House to finish 5th over all. The team consisted of Nat Wilde, Hugh Mcbride, Ollie Strong, Anthony Ng, Sam Kwok, Vlad Yanovskiy, Aslan Zhenetl, Charlie Green, Nick Garvie, Stefan Naumov and Victor Brandt. The following boys were commended for their efforts: Nat Wilde, Ollie Strong, Hugh Mcbride, and Sam Kwok.

The boys have been busy with school football. Tom Smith and Jack Taft have been playing for the school first team. They have played 4 games and won 3. Tom and Jack have both been on the score sheet and Tom was made man of the match for one of the games.  Rory Thomas, Eddie Hui, Michael Prudden and Freddie Green have all played for the school second team that has won 2 out of 3 games.

In basketball Elmshurst have been well represented in a team that has only lost two games in the whole season. Ron Chen is the assistant coach. Jeff Li is the Vice Captain. Vincent Liang, Jackey Leung, Kenneth Chan and Vincent Wong are all regular first team players. Well done to all.

This term has seen Ben Coombs receiving awards that recognise him as the best RAF cadet in the country. This is an excellent achievement and one that is thoroughly deserved. In the recent school drama production Nick Garvie helped out with the lighting and kept his cool even when a power cut struck! On the academic front effort grades were very impressive with the following people being commended.
