| SCHOOL HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS – 2nd HALF LENT TERM 2008
A good half-term break was enjoyed by all, especially two of our tutors Miss Franks and Mr Munn, who along with many Sixth Form enjoyed excellent skiing in Austria. What follows is a brief resume of house events and achievements, as many School successes are detailed elsewhere on this website and in the Deputy Headmaster’s weekly email letter.
Wednesday 20th February – Inter-House Cross Country
The junior team consisted of Jon Corbo, Phil Jukes, Matthew Drane, George Davies, Michael Cheung, Ben Bennett, Matt Allen and Ben Thompson. Despite some good performances we struggled to make headway against strong opposition. However the seniors did well to be amongst two other houses which followed Walters in. The team of Jay Mercer, James Gray, Andy Ling, Patrick Hui, Rob Moreton, Mike Wyres, Oliver Turner and Andy Polychronakis were a credt to the House, in particular the last two runners mentioned achieved well deserved 6th and 7th places respectively (and only 5th form in a field dominated by 6th formers)
Sunday 24th February – House Paintballing trip to Blakedown
Around thirty boys and two staff enjoyed an afternoon of paintballing in the woods near Kidderminster. Both boarding and day pupils took part, with all agreeing that it was great fun. Several new to the activity (principally from Russia and Azerbaijan) needed convincing that it wasn’t a good idea to shoot one’s own men!
Friday 29th February – Senior Inter-House Swimming
Despite a few good swims from the likes of Ryan Dunn, Vladimir Kochetkov, Philip Tear and Chris Griffiths the results did not go our way, particularly in the relays. Other swimmers commended included Alex Evans, Will parsonage, Rupert Waters Niran Chana and James Gray.
Saturday 1st March - Thomas Cookes/School House PA Masked Ball
This was another excellent event at the Bromsgrove Hotel with in excess of 180 parents, staff and sixth form from both houses enjoying a good meal and dancing late into the night. Masks were few and far between amongst the boys but this was more than compensated for by some excellent dancing, despite the annual foray of the Housemaster onto the dance floor.
Wednesday 5th March – Inter House 1.2Km Relay Race
The team of Jonathan Marsh, Alex Morris, Oliver Turner, Andy Polychronakis, Michael Cheung and Lewis Martins competed well in trying to defend the title won last year. However, strong opposition proved too much for this inexperienced team who came a creditable fifth overall.

Friday 7th March – 2nd Grades published

Excellent performances were given by Igor Tikhturov, Jay Mercer, Mike Wyres, Alex Morris, Chris Ormonde, Johnny Marsh, Rupert Waters, Josh Radford, Niran Chana and Charles Eden.
Monday 17th March – Junior Inter-House Football, Senior Debating Finals & Senior B rugby final
Debating - Philip Tear and James Carrington were our finalists with the almost impossible task of opposing the motion that “MP’s should disclose details of all their earnings and expenditure” They opposed the motion robustly and narrowly lost the public vote.
Junior House football – A and B teams competed well but against strong opposition neither team progressed beyond the pool stages.
The A Team comprised of Chris Dodd, Michael Cheung, Ben Thompson, Brian Tsang, Matthew Drane, Jamil Abasov, Alex McGarry , Max Thorpe and Matt Allen.
The B team comprised of Conor Amphlett, Ben Bennett, James Douglas-Osborn, George Davies, Alex Ha, Phil Jukes, Max Gaylor, Lewis Martins, and Christian Lau.

Senior B Rugby Final – The final took place after school against a resolute Lyttelton team, strengthen by players not available in the Michaelmas term. In a close fought game we narrowly lost 5-7 after just failing to convert an excellent try by Alex Morris late in the second half, after Lyttelton opened the scoring. Commended for their efforts were Josh Radford, Niran Chana, Alex Morris, Dominic Wall, Todd Taylor, Nick Spencer, Patrick Hui, Mike Wyres, Johnny Marsh, Dominic Roche, Philip Barron and Harry Perrey.

This has been an intense and intense busy half term, with both 5th form mock GCSE examinations and Upper Sixth A2 module examinations. In addition many of our pupils have represented the school in hockey (where some achieved notable success in the U18 & U16 National Finals), football and cross-country in particular.
Key “House” events of the term so far are detailed as follows. School wide news is detailed in other parts of the website and in the Deputy Headmaster’s weekly email. If by chance you do not receive his email then contact me and I will ensure that it is sent.
Saturday 19th January – Junior House Hockey Competition
A team dominated by lower fourth pupils (a number of upper fourth were unavailable due to “expedition training”) competed well in their pool of the junior competition. Despite dominating for much of the game the team lost their first game with the final flick of the match against a resilient WG team. However, in a close fought final match against the eventual winners a draw did not prove enough to ensure progress to the semis. Great encouragement can be taken from the performance of the team, and with five U14A players. Our prospects next year look promising. The team consisted of Michael Cheung, Jonathan Corbo, Chris Dodd, Michael Evans, Max Thorpe, Max Gayler, James Douglas-Osborn, Christian Lau, Matthew Drane, Martin Lewis and Oliver Dunn. Thanks too to Dominic Wall for his efforts in coaching the team.
Wednesday January 23rd – Junior Inter-House Vocal and piano finals
Lewis Martins and Brian Tsang are to be congratulated upon reaching the final of this section of the junior competition. Brian played Chopin on piano (Nocturne no. 1 in F minor) and Lewis sang “The Peoples Song” from Les Miserables. Both were a credit to the House, with Lewis the runner-up in the vocals section.
Monday 28th February – Senior Debating (1st Round”)
James Carrington and Philip Tear were masterful in proposing the motion that “This House would Ban Extremist Political Parties”. They were well prepared and worked well as a team such that they were deemed worthy of a place in final on 17th March.
Wednesday January 30th - Junior Inter-House Vocal and piano finals
Again the house entered a number of musicians for this round of the music competition, brilliantly organised by Rocky Cheung. Adriam Lam played his violin with aplomb in the final and received much praise for his performance.
Friday 1st February – 1st Grades published

This excellent production was performed over three nights in the Drama Studio. Wiiliam Parsonage is commended for his lead role in the technical crew and Mark Winnett for his mastery of the role of Malvolio. In particular Mark demonstrated that he has comic timing and stage presence not often seen in anm actor so young.
