Monday 9th June

The fourth form have been the only pupils not to be on exams this week with AS, A2 and GCSE exams in full swing. They have had a busy week; experiencing amphibians and snakes at close quarters during the head of year session and competing in the inter-house rounders match on Thursday, as well as revising for their exams which start next week. On Tuesday Eui Lam, Devon Burley and Emma Smith enjoyed an afternoon of shooting with the CCF at the range in Redditch. All managed to gain a score and reduce their grouping following some coaching.

The L6 students were delighted to finish exams this week although they were less impressed with having to go straight into their A2 courses. They have also taken on monitor duties and have done a good job of looking after the house whilst the U6 concentrate on their exams

The highlight of the week was the Mary Windsor House BBQ on Sunday afternoon. We had hired a bouncy castle and ‘sumo suits wrestling’ which provided much entertainment and many good photo opportunities! There were of course the obligatory sausages and burgers and a couple of innings of rounders.

Fixtures: Cat Allan and Devon Burley competed in an athletics match against Repton, Trent, Rugby and Malvern.

Monday 19th May
The house has been a quiet place this week with the Lower sixth and Fifth Form sitting a large number of exams. However, the other years have enjoyed some lighter moments.

Kirstie Friend performed in the Junior play ‘The Winter of Discontent’. It was reassuring that she did not contribute to the hefty body count!

The juniors were privileged to be involved in a Falconry Display on Gordon Green. They learnt about and had close encounters with many magnificent birds of prey.

Junior Tennis took place on Thursday. Polina Georgieva, Kristina Lyapshina, Devon Burley, Emma Smith, Eui Lam, Kirstie Friend and Jenny Sritragul played superbly and took us to victory. Well done!

With Senior House Rounders having to be postponed until this week it was a rather U6 orientated event. As one of the favourite house events all enjoyed some ‘serious’ competition. This year brought another great catch from Laura Brunning but not quite enough to put MW in first place. Those playing were: Laura Brunning, Cat Allan, Juliet Burch, Mandy Shum, Lisa Kuhmann, Julie Adler, Charlie Williams and Louisa Whittaker.

Commendations: Rachel Wiffen, Kimmy Chak, Winnie Tam

Monday 12th May
The fourth form enjoyed yet another sunny day on Monday for their Field day. The Civilian Duke of Edinburgh group completed their walk whilst the CCF cadets tried target shooting, rock climbing and simulated a ‘section and attack’, amongst other things. They all had a great time and returned happy but exhausted.

Exams really got underway this week for the GCSE and AS candidates. We wish all those taking exams over the coming weeks the very best of luck.

We were delighted to see Mandy Shum signed in as a School Monitor in Routh Hall on Friday. She will represent the house excellently.

On Saturday evening Laura Brunning, Jenny Robinson and Lisa Maier had an enjoyable evening at the Sports Ball to raise money for the South Africa trip in the summer.

Commendations: Cathy Ng, Laura Brunning, Mandy Shum, Jenny Sritragul x 2, Kristina Lyapshina.

Monday 5th May
Sports Day took place on Bank Holiday Monday. Mary Windsor came 3rd overall with some notable individual performances. Cat Allan was awarded the Victrix Ludorum (U20) also winning the 100m, whilst Lisa Kuhmann won the Triple jump having never even done it before!

Myself and Mr Johnson greatly enjoyed watching Rachel Dolan in her AS Drama performance. The group were performing adaptations of Brothers’ Grimm Fairy Tales. They made fantastic use of the cast as ‘living scenery’; evoking fear and humour in equal quantities. Rachel made a terrifying evil Queen in ‘Snow White’!

First Grades were published this week with a record number of School Commendations across the house – 40 in total. For the second time this year Mary Windsor gained the top grades in the school. Vanessa Tse, Helen Lee and Winnie Tam were recommended for Head Master’s Commendations

On the weekend the 4th form went off to do their Duke of Edinburgh Silver practice expedition. Devon Burley and Emma Smith left on Saturday morning, whilst Eui Lam, Kristina Lyapshina, Cathy Ng and Vicky Goodwin left on Sunday. They were extremely lucky with the weather with bright sunshine throughout.

A ferociously competitive sports fixture took place on Thursday; boys V girls netball. The matches took place to raise money for the South Africa Tour with the boys sporting some fetching outfits. The Mary Windsor girls put up a good fight but height and brute force seemed to win out.

The U6 leavers celebrated their time in Mary Windsor with a meal out. They enjoyed drinks in the sunshine on the White House roof terrace before heading down into town. Everyone looked lovely having dressed up for the occasion. The meal was at a Thai restaurant – there was mixed success with the chop sticks! Mrs Johnson gave a speech followed by some touching and amusing words from Laura Brunning and Juliet Burch. As Mrs Johnson said: ‘Mary Windsor is the people who populate it and therefore it will never be the same again.’

Senior House Tennis took place on a sunny Friday afternoon. The team played well securing second place overall. Those playing were: Ailin Huang, Jenny Robinson, Mandy Shum, Laura Brunning, Juliet Burch and Lisa Kuhmann.

Saturday Fixtures: Jenny Robinson played Tennis for the 3rd VI at Trent College.

Monday 28th April

Emma Smith, Devon Burley and Eui Lam took part in CCF exercise Grafty Fox. This took place on Tuesday afternoon. Cadets walked out from School and practiced their navigation and self reliance skills.

Thursday saw the whole school taking part in Own Clothes Day. The house raised over £60 to help support our Ugandan Family. Also on Thursday Eui Lam, Holly Yip, Polly Heung and Mandy Shum took part in a superb May Day Concert; Eui leading the orchestra on one of their pieces.

Winnie Tam and Alma Wong were mentioned in Routh Hall for gaining their Gold Award in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. It should be noted that Winnie was the only Lower 4th pupil to gain the highest level. Eui Lam was awarded Silver. Also in Routh Hall, Rachel Dolan was presented with her Shakespeare Bronze Certificate (with Merit), awarded by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Rachel Chan and Holly Yip were mentioned for their role on Young Enterprise.

On Sunday the Choir sang at the Confirmation service.

Fixtures: Kristina Lyapshina and Vicky Goodwin played rounders against Oundle. Whilst Cat Allan, Emma Smith and took part in the Athletics fixture. Emma secured second place in the hurdles and Cat won the Javelin. Jenny Robinson played Tennis for the 3rd VI at Oundle. Earlier in the week Hayley Johnson swam in the Bromsgrove Invitational Relays. Well done to all involved in sport over the weekend.

Commendations: Rachel Wiffen, Beth Wright, Beth Mercer, Winnie Tam, Kirstie Friend, Polly Heung x 2, Kimmy Chak, Eui Lam, Polina Georgieva

Monday 21st April
The week started with all the L6 involved in the Make Poverty History Conference. They found it a challenging and stimulating afternoon and certainly put the visiting speakers through their paces; posing insightful questions. In addition, Cat Allan and Laura Brunning went on the Geography trip, whilst Vicky Goodwin and Cathy Ng had a good day out in London for the History trip.

On Wednesday Cat Allan, Laura Brunning and Mandy Shum represented the school in a rounders match against Kings Worcester.

Well done to Gigi Ng who was awarded her Grade 7 Piano certificate in Routh Hall on Friday – quite and achievement. Also in Routh, Juliet Burch (Netball Captain) presented colours and School Caps for Netball. Juliet was awarded her Cap and Cat Allan won the prestigious ‘Player of the Year’ Cup as well as being awarded her Major School Colours. Jenny Sritragul was mentioned for her place in the Golf team as a L4, ably holding her own alongside senior pupils.

Thank you to Emma Smith, Danii Crow and Lisa Kuhmann who did a great job guiding this week.

Kate Akatyeva enjoyed helping out on the door at an outstanding evening of Russian Orthodox Music held in the School Chapel on Friday.

Commendations: Devon Burley, Polly Heung, Gigi Ng x 2, Kate Akatyeva, Kristina Lyapshina.

Wednesday 16th April
The new term has got off to a good start and we were delighted to welcome a new student, Jenny Sritragul, to the house. Jenny won a competition at the Bromsgrove International School Thailand allowing her to spend a term in the UK. She is a talented golfer and Mr Coates is looking forward to her joining the school Golf Team.

A number of girls took part in school language exchanges during the holiday. They seem to have found the trips profitable.

The new term has brought with it a couple of changes. Over the holidays the house kitchen and Lower Sixth Common Room were refurbished which has been much appreciated. Another rather significant change was that Miss Chamberlain and Mr Johnson returned happily married as Mr and Mrs Johnson, although the name change is taking a bit of getting used to!

The team with the most stars last half term went to Nightingale who will enjoy an evening of pizza and ice cream. Well done to Cathy Ng who earned the highest individual score and runners up Kristina Lyapshina, Kimmy Chak and Devon Burley.

Commendations: Kimmy Chak
