Service in the Community forms an important element in the training for life of every young person and we aim to foster a community spirit and a willingness to help others. At Bromsgrove a graduated scheme of service is spread over a number of years from Bromsgrove Badge to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Combined Cadet Force and Community Service.
In the Lower Fourth all pupils work towards the Bromsgrove Badge, which offers a variety of experiences from campcraft, orienteering and climbing to public speaking, local history and knowledge. One of the first challenges involves a challenging map-reading and walking exercise across the Malvern Hills. The year's course culminates in a weekend camp at Symond's Yat on the River Wye, where the pupils apply the skills they have acquired in a range of activities which include abseiling, camping, canoeing, cooking, and rock climbing.
In the Upper Fourth year, pupils may enroll either in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DofE) or the Army or RAF sections of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). In the D of E pupils learn a skill, pursue a sporting activity and undertake Community Service and an Expedition. Pupils in the CCF follow a varied programme which combines military skills with a strong emphasis on developing teamwork, initiative, leadership and self-reliance. Twice a year the CCF enjoys a Field Day at an Army base and RAF cadets can acquire flying experience. There are also numerous opportunities for adventurous training during the holidays. Many pupils continue in the CCF in the Fifth year and then in the Sixth Form become NCOs, leading the training and organisation of younger pupils.
In the Fifth and Sixth Forms, many pupils undertake Community Service in charity shops, the homes of the elderly and local schools and nurseries. Our pupils regularly host social events for the elderly and disadvantaged of the local community.
All such services may contribute towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which is open to all pupils. There is a well-structured programme of expeditions and many pupils work towards Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
The School places great emphasis on Outdoor Pursuits. Pupils learn to work with and take personal responsibility for others and also develop their individual skills.
