| Wednesday afternoons in the Lower 4th are spent preparing for the Lower 4th Field Day the first preparation is ‘A Day in the Malverns’ which takes place at the beginning of October. The pupils walk in the Malvern surroundings during the morning, following their pre-planned routes and answering questions en-route. A compass exercise and lunch at Castlemorton Common follow and then the second part of the day involves walking the ridge itself. The ultimate challenge is to get over the Worcestershire Beacon and on to North Hill.
The Malvern Day is a good way of giving the pupils a common purpose as a year group at the start of their time at Senior School. Many staff get involved to help the day run smoothly, helping to forge those relationships between staff and pupils outside of the classroom that are so vital. Individually and as a team pupils overcome many challenges returning to school the next day with a huge sense of individual and corporate achievement.
The Wednesday afternoon programme then continues with a carousel of activities including Public Speaking, Campcraft, Climbing, Townscape, Discussion, Orienteering and Navigation to name but a few.
The highlight of the Lower 4th year is the Camp in the Summer Term. This is takes place in the Forest of Dean, along the River Wye. The year group splits in two so that each pupil stays for 3 nights. All pupils complete their practice Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award walk in the forest. They will also take part in a range of activities such as orienteering, canoeing, ropes, archery and the ever competitive raft building. Staff and Lower 6th Form pupils ensure the camp runs efficiently – it is a fantastic way to round off the Bromsgrove year.
