2005 saw the move to a newly converted Music School, and the Department has continued to enjoy great success (especially at producing professional and Oxbridge musicians) in its new three storey, capacious facility which has also enhanced Music participation throughout the School.

Music at Bromsgrove is vibrant and inclusive. Many pupils play instruments and sing, and our aim is to provide something for everyone. All types of musical endeavour are encouraged, and there are opportunities to perform in many different styles at a variety of levels, whether it be the hymn-singing in Chapel, an informal lunchtime recital, an Orchestral and Concerto Concert or an Evening of Jazz and Popular Music. Every pupil in the School competes in the Inter-House Unison Song Competition, and the other components of the Senior School music competition fill another four afternoons.

Many pupils form their own bands and Music staff organise a wide variety of ensembles. Many of our musicians reach very high levels and several have gone on to gain Choral Scholarships or become professional performers or teachers. Our musicians tour regularly both at home and abroad, and a musical or opera is staged every two years: “Les Misérables School Edition” at the new Artrix Theatre in Bromsgrove for example. The School’s Choral Society welcomes parents and friends as well as pupils and staff, and it mounts at least one major concert each year in venues such as Worcester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey.

Within the new Department building, lessons take place in all instruments and singing, and pupils take examinations with the ABRSM, Guildhall and RGT. Pupils enjoy well-equipped teaching rooms, a keyboard laboratory, computer room, recording studio and band room, ethnomusicology room, recital room and rehearsal rooms. All pupils study Music to the end of Key Stage 3, and good numbers opt to take the subject on to GCSE, AS and A2. Routh Hall is where most major concerts take place, though the Memorial Chapel is also an excellent concert venue and has its own two-manual pipe organ.
