The Maths Department is successful, forward-looking and flexible, always seeking to ensure that the courses it offers are most suited to the needs of pupils.  We are a team of nine graduates based in a suite of seven rooms around a computer room, with an eighth room nearby in the Library Resources Centre.  All our classrooms are equipped with computer projection facilities, and full use is made of ICT to enhance teaching and learning.

Most courses in Years 9 to 11 lead to IGCSE rather than GCSE, as we believe that this is a far better mathematical course.  In particular, it is a superior preparation for A-level study and excludes the problematical GCSE coursework.  The exception is for pupils studying at Intermediate Level, which continues to lead to GCSE as this has a B rather than C-maximum restricted paper.  The most able pupils study the first two AS modules in addition to IGCSE.  Pupils are set by ability (usually across usually seven sets) with the set structure changing each year to suit most closely pupils’ abilities.

Two main courses are offered in the Sixth Form. The first leads to AS level Mathematics at the end of the Lower Sixth and A level Mathematics at the end of the Upper Sixth whilst the second leads to A level Mathematics in the Lower Sixth and A level Further Mathematics in the Upper Sixth.  Single mathematicians may choose between mechanics, statistics and decision mathematics for their applied modules.  The department also offers individually tailored courses to meet pupils’ needs, such as to AS Further Mathematics, or in preparation for Oxbridge entrance, or beyond the scope of A levels entirely for the outstandingly able.
