The Chicken wins final faj’heat’a at Castle Combe Raceway
The race day began with a one and a half hour drive down into north Wiltshire to the ever popular Castle Combe Raceway, a circuit with all the drama and pedigree you would expect from one of the UK’s greatest race tracks. The Chicken would be competing against sixty-seven other race teams from around the world in a bid for a final chance to get into the finals next month. For The Chicken it was a chance to try a few theories and experiment with weight advantages during a race.
Race one was going in typical fashion, with the car setting a good solid average speed, despite other kitcars speeding ahead with over-geared eagerness. For this race, at least, it was not meant to be as a loose wire caused the car to stop at the other side of the track half way through - and by the time The Chicken was recovered and returned to the pits it was over for race one. However, we could still win if in the second race we pulled out the furthest distance and so set about finding the fault, cooling the motor and checking the electrics which was diagnosed with wiggling wiring and fuse checking.
To put it mildly the second race was epic and with the same cars flying ahead at the start, and The Chicken moving at a steady pace for the first half, we slowly made our way up the standings. The two pit stops which followed were precise and extremely fast. With our lightest driver in for the last 40 minutes of the race we looked like doing even better as the raced progressed. As predicted, after 70 minutes the faster cars started to fade and slow down, something The Chicken used to do before the major improvements of this season. The Chicken forged on with only a very slight decrease in the overall speed and as the last laps ticked by we went further up the field eventually finishing joint 11th overall and fastest kitcar by a couple of miles.
The team consisted of Ellie C, Alec F, Aled L, Will E, Champion P and Scarlett B. They all worked sublimely together for the perfect team in preparation for the finals next month. Because of this result we are now pole position on the grid at the Kitcar finals on the 15th of October, and 31st on grid for the 16th in the f24 world finals. Four wins out of Four and six trophies so far make this the most successful season to date.
We would also like to thank our sponsors Gorilla Glue, Trumeter, Digital Speedos, Bay Plastics and especially BAL Aluminium’s Julian Cavalot for designing and manufacturing the most amazing heatsink ever (after the 2nd race the motor was almost cold!).
