The Music Department is a whole-school department which means that every student has access to the best equipment and excellent teaching and can experience a huge range of ensembles. All Music lessons and activities take place within the newly converted Webber House where there are excellent facilities including a purpose-built keyboard laboratory.

There are two lessons per week throughout Key Stage 2, and one in Years 7 & 8. Music reading is encouraged at all levels. Year 3  pupils learn to play recorder. They are also given the opportunity of trying a brass instrument and in Year 4 this is extended to strings.

Class lessons, however, are only the beginning of music making, as every pupil has the opportunity to have individual instrumental lessons on a wide range of orchestral  instruments as well as guitar, electric guitar, percussion, piano and voice.

Singing is greatly encouraged. There are separate choirs for junior and senior pupils and in the past 2 years, a choir has participated in the Young Voices Concert held in the NIA, Birmingham. The Junior Choir performs in assemblies and concerts and the Preparatory School Choir sings regularly in Chapel Services as well as in concerts.

For instrumentalists there is the chance to take part in Wind Group, String Group, Brass Group and Orchestra and for the younger members and those starting to play, there is Junior Band. There is a Recorder Group for the more competent players and various chamber groups such as string trio, string quartet, and flute band help to extend the capabilities of the more advanced musicians.

Concerts, and performances of musicals in which all pupils can partake, take place every term and much emphasis is placed on the House Music Competition which encourages the individual to strive for greater things.

We have recently bought a set of steel pans so the sound of the Caribbean will be reverberating down the corridors!
