At the Preparatory School we believe that History should be fun but challenging. Pupils are given first hand experience of a range of historical periods, through artifact handling, field visits and role play activities. Historical events and experiences become real to them when they relive life in a Victorian classroom or re-enact the Peasants’ Revolt.

However, great emphasis is also placed on developing higher order thinking skills and communication skills. Pupils analyse and interpret historical sources and are encouraged to challenge some traditional interpretations. They learn that there is rarely just one version of an historical event.  They learn to question and recognize bias; a skill vital in all areas of life.  They are taught to communicate their opinions clearly and persuasively through oral and written work.  Lively and challenging displays of work encourage pupils to aim high.  Their essay writing skills are developed and refined as they move through the School.

Pupils are also taught to recognize that the past influences all aspects of our lives.  They learn how the past has shaped the present and grow to appreciate their cultural, social, spiritual and political heritage. They understand that “A society without history is like an individual without memories.”
