Swimming
Congratulations to Luke Ladbrooke who won the U16 100m backstroke in the Midlands Championships last weekend. Not only has he broken the school record for this event but he has achieved the National qualifying time.
On Friday the girls and boys swimming squads participated in the Bath and Otter relays at Whitgift School in Croydon. 54 schools competed in the boys competition and 43 schools in the girls. Both boys and girls freestyle relay teams swam well but just missed out securing places in their finals. However, the Boys 4 x 50m Medley relay team consisting of Dan Ruckwood, Wesley Wong, Luke Ladbrooke and Joel Diggins qualified for the final as the second fastest team. In a very close nail biting final Bromsgrove gave a 110% enabling them to lift the Dunelm Cup.
The girls medley team consisting of Alice Walters, Iskra Lawrence, Elaina Williams and Kathryn Perry also swam well and qualified for the final where they finished a very commendable 7th.

Golf
'having beaten Shrewsbury and Clifton College in the previous rounds the school golf team played the regional final in the ISGA (Independant Schools Golf Association) against RGS Worcester. RGS had a strong team with all of their team playing off single figure handicaps including their number 1 player who plays off a handicap of 2 and captains the boys county golf team. At number 1 Laurence Shah gave him a good game before eventually losing 4 and 3. This meant Bromsgrove had to win the next two games to win and in two tight games Anna Perrot and Ryan Cleary both won on the 18th hole which means that the team go through to the national finals which are held over 2 days next week at Hollins Hall Golf and Country Club in Leeds. The top 15 schools in the country will be there (including Millfield, Oakham, Canford, Lorretto and Gordonstoun) after an initial entry of over 100 independant schools. Laurence, Anna and Ryan have contributed much to school golf over the last few years and this is due reward for their efforts and we are confident that they will all compete well at this level next week.'
'Following the golf team,s success on Monday against RGS Worcester a different set of golfers took on Rugby School on Tuesday. There was a good balance of experienced and new golfers representing the school with Bromsgrove eventually winning 3 - 0 over a team who had beaten them earlier in the year.'

Congratulations to Michael Penn and Joel Diggins who represented the England Under 18 team in the European Championships and to Oliver Frost who played in the Six Nations Festival.
1st XV Rugby Player of Season There are a number of good candidates for Player of the Year. Liam Mullan and James Attwood have supplied much needed tackling and good support lines in the Back Row. George Crook and Edward Gardiner have been very dependable in both attack and defence. However there is only one outstanding candidate, the First XV Player of the Year is Michael Penn.
The Perrey Thompson Trophy is awarded to the player who has made the most significant contribution to rugby during their time at Bromsgrove School. This year it has proved very difficult to distinguish between a number players who have represented the school with distinction beginning at under 14 level and progressing through to the 1st XV. This year’s winner has been extremely committed and skilled performers earning the respect of his team mates and opponents alike. This year’s award is presented to Liam Mullan

Netball
It has been another busy week for netball, on Saturday 12th March the 1st and 2nd teams travelled to Cheltenham College to play a triangular match against Cheltenham and Rugby School. The 1st team beat Rugby but narrowly lost to Cheltenham 11-15. The 2nd team won both matches convincingly. At School we hosted an U14 Invitational Tournament which 17 Schools entered. Our U14 team played some good netball but did not progress from the group stages. On Wednesday the U15A team beat Cheltenham Ladies College 35-15 and the U15B team won 38-9 and on Thursday the same two teams played against Kings, Worcester and won 26-22 and 30-4 respectively. The U15 A + B remain unbeaten all season.
Basketball
The Under 19 team played in the North Worcestershire league. They only lost won games during the season and were eventually crowned champions.
Swimming
On Tuesday our U14, U16 and U18 swimming squads competed in the Newcastle-under-Lyme invitational relays. 17 schools attended the gala. All Bromsgrove teams swam well but our best performance was by the U16 Medley relay team consisting of Iskra Lawrence, Alice Walters, Luke Ladbrooke and Daniel Ruckwood who attained a silver medal just missing out on the gold by two hundredths of a second.
On Thursday our swimmers competed in the Bedford individual swimming relays. 16 schools attended including Harrow, Whitgift, Oundle, Stowe. We had a rather impressive gala with us dominating the medal positions. Luke Ladbrooke won gold in the 50m Backstroke and silver in the individual medley, Elaina Williams attained a silver in the 50m Butterfly and a bronze in the individual medley, Alice Walters and Hannah Finney both won a bronze in the 50m backstroke, Daniel Ruckwood despite being only 14 attained a silver in the U19 100m backstroke and a bronze in the U19 100m freestyle, breaking both school records in these events.
Hockey
In the matches versus Rugby School, the 1st XI won a very hard fought battle 4-3. There were good wins for the Under 15 A and Under 14 B teams. The 2nd XI and Under 14 A teams both lost narrowly.
On Wednesday the Boys 1st X1 played against Repton school (The present Midlands Champions). In the first half Greg Cox kept us in the game at 1-1 with some outstanding saves. With 2 goals from Johannes Frank and a goal from Chris Griffiths, all three, fine individual goals we were 3-2 up at the final whistle. Unfortunately Repton had a penalty corner which they scored to equalise. An unbelievable match, with all players playing to their potential. A fitting end, to a superb season.
Football
The 1st XI have had a busy week as both league and cup competitions reach their concluding stages. After beating Haberdashers Boys School in the Crusader Cup quarter final, the team travelled to Kings School, Ely, for the semis. Bromsgrove’s 1st XI, consisting entirely of L6th and 5th form boys played fantastically and matched the home side throughout but with the score at 2-2 with four minutes left to play, Ely found the winning goal and progressed to the final. It was a disappointing end to a great season and as the team also look to finish runners-up in the Independent Schools League as well.
Rugby 7’s
Last weekend, Bromsgrove travelled to compete in the North of England Schools 7’s tournament held in Birkenhead. After beating all opponents in their pool by either 30 or 40 points, which included a 47-0 drubbing of local rivals RGS Worcester, Bromsgrove played Manchester Grammar in the quarter-finals. The result was never in doubt with Bromsgrove winning 24-0. The semi-final pitted us against Daily Mail finalists Barnard Castle. Bromsgrove dominated the first half to lead 14-0 at the break but unfortunately, Bromsgrove made their first real mistakes of the day and lost agonisingly 15-14.
On Wednesday, Bromsgrove entered the Kings Worcester sevens rugby tournament held at Droitwich Rugby Club. Bromsgrove were in the toughest of all four groups and after wins against Warwick School and Loughborough Grammar we lost to a very physical Ellesmere in the lst group match. We battled through the quarter finals to defeat Old Swinford Hospital and then played some of the best rugby of the season to outplay Hereford Cathedral by 6 tries to 0 in the semi-final. We then played Ellesmere again in the Grand final and after it was 19-19 at full-time, Michael Penn scored in sudden death extra time to make Bromsgrove tournament winners.

Football
On Saturday the 1st XI travelled to Wellingborough knowing that a win would put them top of the league with only one game to go. Bromsgrove started brightly and the Wellingborough goalkeeper was forced into a sharp save from Tom Smith and then just after twenty minutes Bromsgrove were awarded a penalty after a foul in the area and Phil Johnson stepped up to give Bromsgrove the lead. Just before half time however Wellingborough equalised following a long ball and they took the lead early in the second half after Elliot Dupree was harshly judged to have committed a foul in the area. Wellingborough added a third later on as Bromsgrove were guilty of letting heads go down and not focussing in the game. The chance of winning the league was therefore lost this season but with the majority of the team in L6th and 5th form, hopes are high of a better performance next year. The all important cup semi final is played at King’s Ely on Tuesday.
Other results against Wellingborough were generally pleasing with the 3rds and U15A’s winning 2-0 and 3-1 respectively and the U15 B’s playing out another classic, drawing 5-5.
Swimming
Dan Ruckwood International Swimming.
Dan Ruckwood (L4) competed in the Four Nations Schools Swimming International over the weekend – 9th/10th March 2007 in Dublin for the England Schools Team. He performed to a very high level and received a silver medal for his individual event – the 100m backstroke and a gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay. The relay team also broke the international schools record. The England Team won the overall trophy for the weekend beating the national school teams from Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
As a result of his strong performances at the international Dan has a good chance of being selected for the prestigious European Schools Championships, which are being held in Poland in 2008 and the World Schools Championships, which are being held in Qatar in 2010. These events would be an excellent build up for Dan, who is hoping to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London.
Cross Country
The final event of the term was the Oundle Invitation relays on Saturday 3rd March. Each team was made up of six runners who each completed a 1.25 mile lap. The Colts came second out of seven teams, and the Girls also finshed second from six. Fastest lap for the Colts was Sam Harvey, while Jo Smith and Becky Phillips who started and finished respectively for the girls, tied on time at 7’55’’. Overall times for each team were: Colts 51’29’’; Girls 58’20’’. Well done to our runners on a very promising season.

There were midweek victories against Cheltenham Ladies College for our 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams and last Saturday all senior and junior teams recorded victories against Tudor Hall School, with the 1st team winning 48-16.
Cross Country
The last of the East Midlands Independent Schools Cross Country league matches took place in Burleigh Park, Stamford last Saturday 28th February. For once conditions were fine, and the course was a single loop through fields and woodland. Our Intermediate boys team finished fifth out of nine teams, with Philip Kravtsov achieving the best Bromsgrove placing in ninth position. Becky Phillips and Jo Smith finished fifth and sixth in the Girls event.
The Boys Team also finished third overall in the league, and were awarded bronze medals.
Golf
On Thursday the school golf team defeated a strong Clifton College team in a closely fought fixture. Laurence Shah, playing at number one, lost by 2 holes to the Clifton player who plays off a handicap of 0.4 and is one of the strongest golfers for his age in the country. Ryan Cleary, playing at number 3, eventually won his match 2 and 1. In the deciding game Anna Perrot was 2 down with 2 holes to play but won the last 2 holes to take the match to extra holes. She kept her nerve to win the match at the first extra hole and this means that Bromsgrove now go through to the regional final against either RGS Worcester or Llandovery.
Rugby 7’s
Last Sunday, Bromsgrove took a squad of 10 to Hereford to compete in the Marches 7's rugby tournament. Bromsgrove easily beat local rivals King's Worcester and RGS Worcester in the pool matches to reach the last 16 where they beat Glantaf from Wales. Bromsgrove were then defeated in the quarter finals by Millfield 15-5 with two of their tries being 70m and 80m counter-attacks when Bromsgrove were threatening on the attack. The committment from Bromsgrove boys was absolutely outstanding and special mention should go to James Riley for being our top try scorer. We are looking forward to a strong performance this Sunday in the North of England 7's tournament in Birkenhead.

Congratulations to Joel Diggins and Michael Penn who have been selected to play for England Under 18’s versus Italy in Mantova next weekend

Fencing- National Champions
On Saturday March 3rd our under 15 Girls Foil Team of Frankie Pioli, Alice Mellar and Helen Brookes won the British School Teams competition held at Upper Heyford. In an impressive display of their skills the only match the girls lost during the day was 43 – 42 to the eventual winners of the under 18 girls foil event.
Football
The 1st XI maintained their 100% record in the Mercian Independent Schools League with a battling win over Uppingham School. Although the poor weather conditions of late made it very difficult to play good quality football on the muddy pitches, both teams acquitted themselves well but it was Bromsgrove who went ahead through a good finish from Jake Burley. Uppingham equalised before Jack Taft finished well and shortly afterwards Jake Burley got his second with a superb lob over the goalkeeper. Tom Smith added a fourth before the Uppingham fight back began but Bromsgrove held on to record a 4-3 victory and move to second in the league. The two final games against Wellingborough and RGS Worcester will decide the eventual league champions.
The 2nd XI also had a good result, winning 5-3 with Tom Lilley getting a hat-trick and the U16A’s did what they have been threatening to do all season, the team finally coming together to record a 9-0 victory and pick up their first win of 2007. The U15 teams travelled to Wycliffe and whilst the B’s unfortunately lost, the A team kept up their strong record with a 4-3 win.
This week the U16A’s play Repton on Tuesday (2pm ko) and all teams take on Wellingborough next Saturday.
2nd March
Football
On Wednesday the 1st XI played their eagerly-awaited Crusader Cup Quarter Final against Haberdashers Boys School from St Albans. Heavy rain and a waterlogged pitch at Haberdashers meant then the game was switched to Bromsgrove to avoid a fixture pile-up towards the end of the season. The first half became a midfield battle with Henry Newman and Elliot Dupree working hard against the three man Haberdashers centre midfield. Cup finalists for the past two seasons, Haberdashers almost scored after 20 minutes when Michael Palmer expertly cleared off the line. With the wind behind them in the second half Bromsgrove pushed forward and Elliot Dupree scored with 15 minutes left and extra time fast approaching. Bromsgrove could have had a second when Karl Lockley hit the bar and they held on bravely for a place in the semi final.
Elsewhere in the week the 2nds went down 2-1 to St Edwards whilst the U16A’s drew 3-3. This Saturday, the 1sts (Mercian League game) and the other Senior teams entertain Uppingham at home whilst the U15 A+B’s travel to Wycliffe School.
Cross Country
On Wednesday 28th February our team travelled to Malvern College to compete for the Berrows Cup and DC Temple Trophy. Conditions were appalling, with a gale blowing rain horizontally across the common. Only Hereford Cathedral School put out a team against our junior boys, and with our runners finishing in first, third, fourth and sixth position, we won the DC Temple Trophy. The girls’ team also defeated their opponents from HCS convincingly and brought home some silverware. The senior Boys were less successful in a four way match, but Sam Harvey put in a strong performance to finish in fifth place as the first Bromsgrovian. Congratulations to all who survived the experience.

Basketball
This Wednesday our under 19 squad produced an outstanding result at Tenbury Wells in a tournament comprising short games. We were invited to attend as a direct result of the success of our own tournaments & once again met St Michaels College & Old Swinford School. In all we played 4 short games, winning 2, drawing one & losing the final one once we knew that we were bound to be overall winners.
Netball
The girls produced another strong netball performance on the Saturday before half term with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Under 15A, under 15B and under 14B teams all beating Dean Close. Particularly impressive were the 1st team who ran out 37-32 winners in a gripping match. The 1st team also went on to beat Trent College 18-16 in another close match the following Tuesday. This Wednesday our 2nd and 3rd teams beat Stowe 1st and 2nd teams 37-6 and 40-3 respectively.

Vs St Edward’s (Crusader Cup)
The 1st XI travelled to St Edwards on Tuesday knowing that they had to win to stand any chance of qualifying from the group stages of the Crusader Cup. With a new formation and some different personnel Bromsgrove started brightly but went a goal behind midway through the first half. Bromsgrove hit back immediately and were in front five minutes later, Elliot Dupree scoring on his 1st XI debut then James Johnson immediately followed that up by scoring a wonderful solo effort. In the second half Bromsgrove continued to press forward and Dupree added a second with a good volley before Jake Burley wrapped things up with Bromsgrove’s fourth goal. This meant that Bromsgrove had done enough to confirm that they had qualified for the knock-out stages of the Crusader Cup and as results filtered through from the other match in the group it became almost certain that Bromsgrove would qualify in second place and face an away tie early next half term.
Football

Hockey
This was a big weekend for hockey with three teams at the National Indoor Finals at three different venues.
The U16 boys failed to reach the semi-finals but played bravely and well; they will have gained much from their experiences and we are proud of them.
The U18 boys really impressed in the group stages with several emphatic victories. In the semi-finals we played our old adversaries Millfield School and that always means a very competitive, close encounter, especially in a national semi-final. 1-0 in arrears at half-time and then 2-0 down, we fought back to 2-2 with a breathtaking goal from a short corner by Captain Joannes Frank which levelled the score. Alas, as both teams sought the lead, Millfield went ahead and we lost 5-3. It was a privilege to watch the team and we were very proud of them; they displayed great character and sportsmanship. Chris Grffiths - our very talented 5th Form player - was unavailable; he is in Australia with the U21 Great Britain team and yesterday played in the Olympic Youth Final.
The U18 girls' team reached the National Final for the second year in a row. They were very impressive in the group stages, winning their last decisive match 6-1 and then the semi-final in fine style 5-1. So, then to the National Indoor Arena where we narrowly lost last year's final 3-2. Cheered on by pupils, parents and staff, we scored first against King's Canterbury but at half-time were 3-1 down. In a tremendous second half team display and comeback (distinguished by several dazzling runs by Julie Adler), we dominated the half, scored twice, hit the post twice and almost snatched victory with a breathtaking move in the dying seconds. So it went to a penalty shoot-out, sudden death and a 2-1 defeat. It was a cruel finish to such a valiant effort in a world-class arena. There was sadness and disappointment but all of us took great pride in every single one of the squad. They all put their hearts and souls into the match, showed impeccable sportsmanship throughout and dignity and grace in defeat. When they came down to 'our end' our supporters gave them a rousing ovation, as did pupils and families from Canterbury.

Hockey
Girls U16 Midland’s Indoor Finals
On the Saturday before the start of this term the U16 Girls Indoor Hockey team competed at the Midlands’ Finals. They won their first game 9-0 against Wolverhampton Grammar School. In the second game they faced the National Finalists from last year, Belper Hockey Club. Belper were far too strong and beat us convincingly. In our final group game we needed to win to qualify for the semi finals. Against Bablake we went a goal down, but fought back well, scoring the winning goal from a well worked penalty corner. In the semi final we faced Dame Alice Harper School. Again we went a goal down. After half time we came out rallying and were 2-1 up. Unfortunately we conceded in the very last second of the game, leaving the match to be decided by penalty strokes. We narrowly lost 1-0, but a tremendous performance from a young side, bodes well for next year.
Boys U16 County Cup Final
Last Monday the U16 Boys Hockey team faced Nunnery Wood in the County Cup Final. We actually fielded an U15 side.. Being 1-2 down at half time gave us added incentive to play some quality hockey in the second half. Eventually 4 goals from Ben Cox during the whole match meant we finished 4 – 2 up and County U16 Champions. We now represent Worcestershire in the Midland’s rounds. Well done to all the boys involved.
Boys Hockey v Trent College
1st X1 L 2 - 4
The first team faced a tough battle against Trent, with two of our regular players missing.
After being a goal up we went 1 - 3 down, and even though we fought back to 2 - 3, we didn’t manage to hold out, and eventually lost 2 – 4.
2nds L 3 – 4
U15A D 4 – 4
U15B L 0 – 2
U14A L 0 – 3
U14B L 0 – 4
U14C L 0 - 6
Although the rest of the results went mainly Trent’s way, the improvement on last year was fantastic.
Basketball
The Under 15 team beat Arrow Vale 90-26 with James Bell 27 and Cameron Wilson 18 top scoring.
Netball
The netball term got off to a flying start with matches last weekend against Malvern College. All 3 senior teams recorded victories with the 1st team winning 37-13. The junior teams also competed well with the under 15 A and B teams plus the under 14 B teams all winning. Good luck to the 1st team as they compete in the West Midlands round of the National Tournament today.
Football
Last Saturday the 1st XI started their Crusader Cup campaign away to the current cup holders, Rugby School. A tense game was decided just before half time when Bromsgrove went ahead through Tom Smith. Although Rugby fought back, Bromsgrove held on for a well deserved victory. Results elsewhere generally went Bromsgrove’s way with victories for both U15 teams, the U16 B’s and the 3rd XI.

Boys Hockey
On Wednesday the 1st XI beat Worcester 6th Form College 5-2 to become county champions.
Last Sunday, the boys U16 and U18 Indoor teams competed in the Midlands' Finals. In the U16 competition the first game was against Princethorpe which they easily won 8-0. The second was a tougher game against Beeston, where we were 4-0 down in the first half. The score ended 4-0, which showed promise for what was left. The next game the side beat Wolverhampton comfortably after being 2 goals down. We went into the last game thinking a win was needed, but even though we lost to Newcastle, other results went our way, and we qualified for the National Finals in January as runners up of the Midlands. An excellent achievement for a young team.
The boys Under 18 played there first match against Cannock Hockey Club, who had several National League players. Some excellent defending only allowed 2 goals to be scored against us, and we won 6-2. The second game was against Warwick School which we dominated and won 11-0. The semi final was against Belper Hockey Club, where we were clearly the better team, and we finished 7-0 ahead. Having qualified for the National Finals, the team played Beeston in the Final. A tense game finished 2-1 to Bromsgrove.
Girls Under 18 Midlands Indoor
In the group matches the school beat Dame Alice Harpur, The Chase High School and Nottingham Highfields to qualify for the semi-finals.
A bit of a shock result saw Sutton Coldfield, last year’s National Champions, go out against our earlier opponents – Nottingham Highfields. Even though we knew we were going to the finals we still wanted to retain our title as Midlands Champions and take home the trophy once again. We played out a calm, patient final and ran our opponents ragged finally winnning 3-2 to retain our title!

Girls U18 Outdoor Midlands Finals
The outdoor Midlands Finals took place on a bright crisp day on Tuesday. Bromsgrove were in a tough pool of 5 teams that included Oundle and Repton but the girls hit the ground running and won the first 2 games, 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. Then the first of two tough ones; Repton, the current holders of the U18 National School’s title for the past 2 years running. We lost 3-0 in the pool game but only from 3 short corners, the rest of the game we defended well and didn’t let them score from open play. So to the last game of the pool – Oundle, a team who had beaten us quite convincingly only weeks earlier. Our girls only needed a draw to go through and Oundle had to win. We put in a determined and gritty performance and kept the ball mainly in their defensive half, they struggled to break out and we held out for a 0-0 score.
So through to the semi-finals against Solihull school. A rather scrappy game that saw Bromsgrove struggle to make use of their chances, it ended 0-0 and it therefore went straight to the dreaded penalty flicks. Our five flick takers, under a huge amount of pressure stepped up to the plate and coolly slotted 3 of the 5 penalties away. Our goalkeeper Lily Darvil saved 3 of theirs to make the final score 3-2. After a brief celebration it was on to the serious business of the final against – who else but Repton.
With the adrenaline still flowing from the semi –finals, the girls went out and gave one of their gutsiest performances. They never gave up and at times had Repton on the back foot. We had our chances, we pressured and won short corners and broke in to their ‘D’ on a few occasions. However Repton who only had two chances all game, took them, again from two short corners to make the final score 2-0. The girls are to be congratulated for finishing Midlands runners up, which ranks them in the top ten teams in the country.
Congratulations to Joel Dudley who has been selected for the England Under 16 Hockey squad. The squad will now prepare to play in the Home Nations tournament during the Easter holidays.
