On Saturday 15th Marach the U14 netball team competed at the National Netball Finals in Bournemouth. The girls won their pool beating Central Newcastle 14-0, Bournemouth School for Girls 10-8, Nottingham Girls' High School 12-4, Barking Abbey 14-1, Huntington School 12-9, Alsager School 16-12, Herts and Essex 9-8 and drawing with Hurstpierpoint 11-11. They then faced Goffs in the semi-final and despite the wet conditions played well to narrowly lose 10-8. The girls displayed some excellent netball and should be proud of their achievement.

10th March

Choral Society and Choral Evensong
The Choir performed Choral Evensong at Bath Abbey and  the Choral Society performed an outstanding Concert at Pershore Abbey.  The programme included  Haydn’s ‘Te Deum’;   Mozart’s Clarinet Concert with pupil soloist Michael Pearce, who delivered a supremely confident, sensitive performance and  Mozart’s unfinished Requiem, the Choral Society of pupils, staff, Old Bromsgrovians, parents and friends of the School, and soloists delivered a splendid performance and the Orchestra was splendid throughout the evening.

Pop and Jazz
This highly enjoyable event showcases the talent of pupils and staff and really is a ‘must see’ event in the School’s musical calendar.    This year the two performance areas allowed the acts to link seamlessly without a compere to lead the evening.  The audience enjoyed their picnics in the candle-lit atmosphere of Routh Hall and were entertained by splendid performances by ensembles and bands - Big Band, Chamber Choir, Andy Lai and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Sax Quartet, Black Rose, Dr Thompson and the Physics Dudes and the Pearce Trio. Individual efforts came from Mr Greetham, Vanessa Tse, Chris Edwards, Jessica Kingston, Dan Southall, Michael Palmer, Chloe Deval-Reed. Dr Thompson, Michael Pearce, Tom King, Emily Richards, Simon Powell, Jess Wolinski, Emma Henderson and Femi Oluwole. There were fine duets - vocal from Ellie Johns and Nathan Stone, Harriet Eales and Emma Hobday - and Henry Newman & Co brought the House down with an Andy Williams number cabaret-style.  Well done to all these and others who performed.

Debating
Alex Harding and Alex Avern won the second round of the English-Speaking Union Debate, opposing the motion "This House Would Abolish All Hate Crime Legislation".  They now compete at the Central Region final, from where one team will be selected to contest the National Final in London.  Reaching this stage also guarantees an England trial next year for Alex Harding.

A team of eight Lower Sixth competed in the Midland Sessions of the European Youth Parliament in Birmingham Council House, debating a variety of motions concerned with the future of Europe, and proposing a resolution on the EU maritime strategy.  Opening and closing speeches from Ellie Wilson and Alex Harding, plus enthusiastic and scholarly participation from the whole team, meant that they were declared winners of the Midlands' Sessions, and now go to the National Finals in Durham in September, with the chance of subsequently proceeding to an International Session in France or Sweden.

25th February

Sixth Form Ski Trip
Forty Sixth Formers and ten staff thoroughly enjoyed their week on the slopes at Kitzbuhel, Austria.   There was plenty of snow and for five of the six days they enjoyed clear blue skies – perfect skiing conditions.  In the evenings the group enjoyed sampling local Austrian entertainment including skittles and a fondue evening as well as taking in the atmosphere in Kitzbuhel town itself.

Twelfth Night
‘Twelfth Night’ was unfortunately curtailed by a power cut on the first night just before the final scene.  A very talented cast had worked very hard and showed great fortitude by singing the final song in flickering torchlight.  The final night went smoothly and without incident.  This was a great production by a talented cast, major roles played by Jodie Poole, Alex Harding, Leila Zoeftig, Emma Henderson, Mark Winnett, Rachel Toner, Henry Cowen and Rupert Harris.  Emma Henderson’s stunning voice (and Mr Knight’s original music) added great enchantment to the evening.

National Indoor Hockey News
U18 boys mad the final at Birmingham's NIA after some thrilling matches in the group stages. Playing against Southgate hockey club the score at the final whistle was 4-4.  After almost a dozen penalties, Southgate squeezed past us to win the title.  If ever the fates were against us it was yesterday for we had beaten them comfortably at Kidderminster.  Such is life in a cup final.  It was the third year in a row that we have appeared at the finals – U18 girls in 2006 and 2007, U18 boys this year – and we still long for that win.  But we were again 2nd in the land in a huge competition and the only School in England to have three teams at the Nationals.

The U18 girls’ indoor team competed in these Finals for the third year running.  After losing to Kingston Grammar School and Bowdon hockey club, we played some outstanding hockey in an excellent 7-2 victory over Queenswood.  We then lost a close match against Taunton School which precluded a semi- final appearance but it was still a great achievement to go so far in the competition.

The U16 boys’ team made their debut at the National Indoor Finals.  Although they did not reach the semi-finals, they played some excellent hockey, displayed great commitment and gained much from the experience.  We were drawn in a very strong group with the eventual finalists Whitgift and the Perse. The team won one game but lost a very close game against the eventual National Champions the Perse 3-2.

“The Last of the Great Romantics”
The third of this year’s Senior School productions is a brand-new musical comedy. Sophisticated and stylish, The Last of the Great Romantics is a tale of identity, of deception, and of a very influential woman who doesn't exist. With all the wit and flair of the good old days, it's a modern he-loves-her, she-loves-him, they-both-don't-know sort of show. Join an exceptional Sixth-Form cast as they look for love in all the places it couldn't possibly be, and isn't.
The World Premiere begins at 7.30 p.m. in the Drama Studio on WEdnedsday 27th February, or you can catch the second night on Thursday 28th February. Tickets are ABSOLUTELY FREE! Please email Mr N Baldock to reserve your seats (nbaldock@bromsgrove-school.co.uk)

Netball
it was a historic weekend for our U19, U16 and U14 teams who represented Worcestershire in the West Midlands' netball finals on Saturday.  It was the first time in our history that we have represented the County at all age groups on the same occasion.  The U14s enjoyed a major triumph.  They won every match in their pool beating King Edward's Camp Hill 10-2, Higham 14-6, Tenbury High 14-1, Wolverhampton Girls' High 13-6, Shrewsbury High School 15-3 and Newcastle under Lyme 5-4.  In the semi-final they eased past Ludlow with a 16-4 win and though already having secured a place in the National Finals at Bournemouth on March 15th, they defeated Streetly Sports College 12-8 in the final to be crowned champions.  The U19 and U16 teams competed well winning many of their pool matches but narrowly missed out qualifying for the semi-finals in their respective competitions.

Hockey
We wish our U18 boys, U18 girls and U16 boy’s teams and their coaches every success in next weekend's National Indoor Finals.  They take place at three Midland locations and the televised finals take place at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Sunday.

British Physics Olympiad
Wendy Wang (L6) took part in the British Physics Olympiad, a competition designed for A2 students.  Wendy attained a gold medal – making her one of the top 50 students in the country.  Wendy will sit a further paper in February from which 15 candidates will be selected to participate in a three day training camp and ultimately the best of those students will represent Britain in the International Olympiad.

Fencing
After finishing 41st out of 194 fencers from 12 nations in the 30th Zeppelin Cadet Epee Competition in Friedrichshafen, Germany, Stephen Edgar has now been selected as the fourth member of the British U17 Epee team for the European Cadet Championships in Italy later this year.

18th January

Debating
Alex Avern and Alex Harding debated in the first round of the English-Speaking Union Debating Competition, the largest debating competition in the UK.  Proposing the motion “This House Would Give Prisoners the Right to Vote” they argued forcefully and with great conviction and were placed first out of the six competing schools.  They now proceed to the county final of the competition.
