GIRLS NATIONAL IAPS SWIMMING FINALS 2008
Seventeen swimmers from Years 4,5,6,7 & 8 took part in this year’s National IAPS swimming finals at K2 swimming baths, Crawley West Sussex. This turned out to be another hugely successful day for our girl swimmers.
The U13 girls came third overall as a team. There were 6 school records broken, 3 silver medals, I bronze medal and several personal best times recorded. Well done to all who took part.
WEDNESDAY 7TH MAY
CRICKET V ABBERLEY HALL
13 A
The under 13 A team enjoyed their first victory of the season on Wednesday against Abberley Hall. Electing to bat first Bromsgrove scored 125 for 8 off their 30 overs with Charles Hill scoring 31, ably assisted by Calum Phillips and Alex Hillier with scores of 23 and 13 respectively. In reply Abberley started nervously losing two very quick wickets. However, they recovered well and looked to threaten our total. Fortunately some excellent bowling by William Hunt with four wickets saved the day and Abberley were all out for 115 giving us a 10 run victory.
U13 B
We batted first and scored 77 all out in 23 overs. Abberley reached our total with the loss of 6 wickets and thus won by 4 wickets.
U12 A
The opposition chose to bat first and scored 74 for 8. Ben Robinson took 4 wickets. We reached Blue Coat’s total for the loss of 5 wickets, winning the match. James Cooper scored 23 and Kit Thornton 22.
4th XI
The 4th XI had a comfortable seven wicket win. Batting first, Abberley were soon in trouble at 16 for 5. Unfortunately, some wayward bowling (31 extras) helped our visitors to reach a respectable 78 by the end of their innings. In reply, Bromsgove scored 79 for the loss of 3 wickets, William Casasola scoring 23 and Monty Alexander 14 not out.
U11 A
Bromsgrove elected to bat first and were all out for 85 runs off 28.1 overs. Matthew Harker and Daniel Holmes had an opening batting partnership which almost lasted ten overs. Josh Duberley scored 19 runs and looked set for a big score before being run out. Abberley reached their target of 86 runs for the loss of three wickets in fifteen overs. Daniel Holmes took two wickets and Justin Clegg one.
U10 A
The U10 A cricket team enjoyed an impressive victory against Abberley Hall. The visitors won the toss and opened the batting with a total of just 68 runs all out; Bromsgrove bowled and fielded well; Charles Kendrick and James Taylor deserve special congratulations. Henry Walker and Dylan Longden opened the batting well and proved to be a strong duo. Indeed, Henry Walker should be proud of scoring his first half-century for Bromsgrove! Despite gaining a comfortable victory, the decision was made to play on the full 25 overs so that all players could benefit from batting. Bromsgrove then closed the match with an impressive and well-deserved total of 144 runs.
ROUNDERS V BLUE COAT
U12 & U13
Both the weather and the setting of Packwood were glorious for rounders but Bromsgrove unfortunately lost both the U12 and U13 matches. With final scores of 7 ½ to 11 ½ for the U12s and 13 ½ to 19 ½ for the U13s – this was a very pleasant afternoon of sport.
U11 A & B
U11 A won 9 - 6½ and U11 B won 7½ - 6. A glorious afternoon on the field saw two good wins for the under 11s. All of the girls played well and enjoyed the sunshine!
U10 A & B
The U10A played an excellent game, improving more and more as the game went on especially their hitting. The final score was 21-15 to Bromsgrove.
The U10B also played an excellent all round game; they remained focussed throughout and fielded well. Some excellent hitting from several members of the team resulted in an outstanding final score of 13-6½ to Bromsgrove.
GIRLS’ TENNIS V ABBERLEY HALL
U13
The Under 13 girls had another excellent win, 6 rubbers to 3. Some high quality tennis was played with many exciting rallies.
U12
The Under 12 team fought a closely contested match only narrowly losing, 5 rubbers to 4
Last Saturday Kaya Wilson broke the Year 8 girls’ shot put record with a massive throw of 9.02 metres – a very significant achievement – well done Kaya!
SATURDAY 26TH APRIL
SENIOR GIRLS ATHLETICS
Congratulations to all girls as many of them managed to gain personal bests in their events and Becky Straw secured a new school record in the 1500m - 5m 16.5 secs. Megan Humphreys beat the Senior School U15 competitor in both the 100 and 200m, boding very well for the season ahead. Some pupils participated in new events and were very pleasantly rewarded with respectable times and distances. We are well on the way to finding further talent in the field events. Pippa Brock and Libby Thornton jumped 4.39m and 4.22m in the long jump and a very exciting race in the hurdles gave Libby 1st place.
CRICKET V RGS WORCESTER
U13A
On Saturday we took on a very successful RGS Worcester team. Having chosen to bat on this occasion, we started well with William Hunt and Jacob Jaya batting for sometime. Unfortunately wickets soon fell and we were bowled out for just 69 runs. In reply RGS scored 70 with the loss of just one wicket.
U12A
We batted first and despite using our full 30 overs, only scored 76. Sam Duberley top scored with 17. RGS had little trouble reaching our total and won the match.
4TH XI
The 4th XI lost by 2 runs. The boys did well to dismiss the home side for just 60 but the Bromsgrove batsmen were unable to make the 61 required for victory.
SUNDAY 27TH APRIL
U13 BOYS MINI HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
The U13 boys took part in the Midlands Mini Hockey Championships on Sunday and they were in a pool of 4 teams. It proved to be a very tough pool with both Trent and Beeston eventually winning through to the final and the boys played with great credit against them.
V Ludlow Hockey Club we drew 0-0.
V Trent, we lost 2-1
V Beeston we drew 0-0
V Rutland Club (in the play-off for 5th and 6th places) we lost 1-0
U13 GIRLS MINI HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
In the league the girls beat Shrewsbury High School and Wellingborough Prep School, had a score draw with the home team Cannock Hockey Club and no score draw with South Leicestershire Hockey Club. Bromsgrove won their group matches and went on to play Newark Hockey Club in the semi final. This was by far the hardest match and Bromsgrove lost the match but had the satisfaction of playing good hockey and, in joint third place in the tournament, were the highest ranked school in the Midland
Congratulations to Ellen Lockhart and Rachel Clare, who have both received invites to go for Midlands training after their performances in this competition.
U11 BOYS MINI HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
After a slow start, losing 2–0 to Cannock HC, they easily beat Ludlow HC 2- 0 and then outplayed Belper HC only to lose 1–0 as they couldn’t grasp their goal scoring opportunities. This put them into the 5th/6th place play-off against Beeston HC, which they drew 1–1.
WEDNESDAY 30TH APRIL
4TH XI CRICKET V FOREMARKE HALL
The 4th XI played away at Foremarke Hall in a timed match. Batting first, Bromsgrove did well to reach 60 from a massive 35 overs, William Casasola scoring 19. In reply, the home side were equally uncomfortable at the crease, crawling to 55 for 5 at stumps. The match was drawn.
NATIONAL SCHOOLS SWIMMING RELAYS
Our leading swimmers from Years 5 & 6 were in action at the Division 6 round (Herefordshire, Worcestershire, West Midlands and Shropshire) of the National Primary Schools’ Relays at Stetchford Baths, Birmingham. This was a resounding success for Bromsgrove as our U11 boys and girls team won all of the medley and freestyle relays and have now qualified for the National Final at Ponds Forge International Centre, Sheffield on Saturday 21st June. There were some very notable performances from all our swimmers with Jack Weston breaking his own U10 25 metres backstroke school record.
We would like to wish all our leading U10,U11, U12 and U13 girls the very best of luck as they are competing in the National IAPS Swimming Finals at K2 Crawley, West Sussex all day on Saturday 3rd May.
