Music at Bromsgrove
Music at Bromsgrove School is vibrant and inclusive. Each pupil is aided by a team of specialist teachers
to find their own musical journey through an imaginative and stimulating curriculum, with the option of learning an instrument from the earliest opportunity and by participating in a wide range of extra-curricular musical activities.
Our aim is to provide something for everyone: all types of musical endeavour are encouraged. All pupils in Year 3 learn violin, viola, cello or double bass for a year as part of the School-funded String Initiative
giving a solid foundation and many go on to pursue individual or group music tuition throughout the Prep and Senior Schools. The department is a centre for termly ABRSM
examinations, and Trinity
examinations are run twice yearly.
There are opportunities to perform in many different styles at a variety of levels, whether it be the hymn-singing in Chapel, an informal lunchtime recital, an Orchestral and Concerto Concert or an Evening of Jazz and Popular Music. Every pupil in the Prep and Senior Schools competes in the Inter-House Unison Song Competition, and music competitions offer opportunities for excellent soloists. Many of these performances are uploaded onto the School's YouTube
channel. In 2015 the whole school recorded a CD and this can be purchased from the music school (more information here
Many pupils form their own bands and music staff organise a wide variety of ensembles in both the Prep
Schools. Large numbers of our musicians reach very high levels and several have gone on to secure places at Conservatoires in Birmingham, London (RCM and RAM) and Manchester (RNCM), Choral or Organ Scholarships or become professional performers or teachers.
Our musicians tour regularly both at home and abroad, and a musical is staged every two years. Bromsgrove School's Choral Society
, averaging 120 singers, welcomes parents and friends as well as pupils and staff, and it mounts at least one major concert each year in Routh Hall, or in local venues such as Pershore Abbey or Birmingham Town Hall.
