U13 Boys' Hockey team at IAPS National Finals
The 1st VII senior boys hockey team came mightily close to defending their National hockey title from last year when they were runners up at this year’s competition held at Millfield Senior School on Tuesday 20th March.
The group games were against Bishops Stortford (W 3-2), Durlston Court (W 2-1), Cheltenham College (W 2-1) and St Andrews (D 1-1).
In the quarter finals Bromsgrove were against Loretto from Scotland and this proved to be a very tough and physical encounter. They were a big, athletic side and it took a huge effort from the Bromsgrove boys to emerge winners 3-2.
Going into the semi-final, the team played Bilton Grange, a side the boys knew well having just scraped a win against them in the hockey season. Bromsgrove were 2-0 down but the boys dug really deep and clawed their way back to 2-2. It stayed like that until the end, meaning both teams had to play a period of sudden death extra time, still 2-2 at the end of that, and then had to go to penalty flicks. Unbelievably, with boys on both teams missing at crucial times, Bromsgrove eventually won 6-5, to go into the final.
The final was against Bishops Stortford, and they had raised their game considerably since they had played them in the group stages. Inevitably, the bubble had to burst at some stage, and the boys were both physically and mentally drained after the semi-final. We only had a 5 minute break before the final, and although we competed well, we could not match the levels we had reached earlier in the day and Bishops Stortford deservedly won 2-0.
The boys had exceeded all expectations however, and should feel really proud of their achievement on the day. To finish runners up in the National Championships is no mean feat, and the boys can take pride in their performance. Tom Banton was exceptional and led the team well all day, but the whole squad all played their part, including 2 boys from Y7 who will take the experience gained into next year.

Congratulations and thanks must be extended to the Coaching team of Chris Harris, Andrew Langlands and Harry Jones who have coached the boys this year.
This comes on top of their recent success at the Millfield rugby 7’s Plate Final and runners up at the nationals in cross country. Congratulations to the team on their successes this term.
